FE-35 Transmission Oil Filler Pt3

Hello again folks,
Well we're slowly getting there with this however now that I have found the right place to top up the trans oil my next stumbling block is that the bolt head is blimmen tight and slightly burred on the corners (burred to much for a ring spanner) and I'm using an adjustable wrench to try and get it off. Do you think running the tractor for a while to warm everything up would help in loosening the bolt? Thanks as always.

This may be obvious to you, but just in case, did you use a 6 point socket/wrench? C. T.

Craig, I have a machine with a belly mower. The bolts that hold the blades on are always rounded. I had never heard of 6 point untill I went to ask my neighbor (a retired mechanic) for help in removing the blades for sharpening. He pulled out a six point socket, and it was child's play. No problem removing the bolt. If you have a Sear's store, that is where I bought mine. I have bought nothing but six point since. (although, the twelve point still have their uses). Email me if you need further assistance in locating 6 point. We can work something out. C. T.

Good thinking C.T. Following on from that line of thought I imagine an Open Ended Spanner would do the job as well then.....and may be more easily found. CD

Craig, I think I am learning the language. I believe what you refer to as a ring spanner is a box end wrench here. An open end spanner is an open end wrench here. Maybe the two week England/Scotland/Wales tour my wife and I went on with a gentleman from New Zealand is paying off! I don't think the open end spanner will be as effective as a six point ring spanner. It's worth a shot, but you may need all surfaces of the bolt covered. Email me and we can work out something. C. Craig;
Can you file the flats on the filler cap to get them flat again and thus allowing your adjustable wrench to bite? You might try a pipe wrench but it'll leave teeth marks... Warming it up can't hurt.

have a look for a three quarter dive impact wrench socket that fits they are six point and get the handle to suit. it does seem its time to replace that bung / cap / bolt whatever!

six point socket is the way to go- the new type flank drives are even better, the points of the nut are just not where you want to be applying the force- only tool us 100 years to figure that out

The flank drives put the force on the flat part of the nut, not the points. makes it impossible to round off

12 point ring spaner or open end spanner are not the right tool for a soft nut like that anyway
