This old beast starts and runs and has plenty of power for the elderly citzen it is. My wifes father bought it used 20 years ago and they used it to make hay on their farm. Looking at servicing this summer, replacing presssure plate, disc ect. Gear selection in trans is very stiff but engages in all gears. Trans has a whine at idle when not in gear. I want to drain and refil case 1st and replace trans lever seals hoping that will quiet it down and loosen it up. Any suggestions would be apprediated.

Bruce thanks for the tips. What oil would you think I should use?

Sounds like the oil in trans is still the old heavy weight oil they used.Putting in new oil will probably make it shift better.I have eight massey tractors and every one of the has a whine in the trans. When you lift the engine out to change the clutch make sure you keep track of the shims under the front motor mount. When every thing is in-line the bel-housing should sit flat on the frame and on the chain coupler you should be able to move the chain in the sprockets.
