Here is an interesting and delightful story. A friend of mine decided to restore his dad's Massey Harris grain binder and since he runs a paint and sandblast business it wasn't too hard. I told him he should get a Massey 22 and restore it for the binder. Last week he thought he saw a Massey 22 at a dealers lot. He called and they said yeah. He loaded up his trailer and went and got another old friend who is an avid Massey collector. When they arrived it didn't take long for the oldster to tell the youngsters that weren't no Massey 22. My friend Jack decided not to take it since it wasn't a 22 but my elder friend knew what it was . He dickered and loaded it for $900. This tractor is in running condition with good sheet metal and decent tires. I am led to believe that this model built in 1942 was one of twenty -four row crop 82's. If this is so then it was a heck of a stroke of luck. If anyone has info about production on these I'd like to hear it..Mike in Exeter Ontario

Hello Mike, how're those "Hawks" doing, still flying along? I have a page of serial numbers here that I got from the Wild Harvest (MH) Collectors Magazine some years ago and it says that the model 82 row crop started in 1941 with the number 420001, then '42 started at 420055, then 1945 at 420274 and finally 1946 at 420307 (and ending with 420425). That number you said would make sense for the first year of production (1941) but it seems they kept on going later too. Don't know what happened to '43 and '44 during the war, maybe it wasn't made then. Apparently Massey made a lot of big deck guns for ships during the war.

Hi Mike, the Hawks are in first place overall, 8 games left in schedule and playoffs waiting. I will get the numbers off of that 82..could be a 1941 but Orland thought 1942. It is 1 concession over from my farm so someday after chores I will slip over and see it. Its been real cold here..-15C and -9C through the day..about 8 days of this cold snap..stormy as well..How are things in Edmonton..Mike in Exeter Ontario

A friend of mine who passed away a few years ago had a 1942 82 Row Crop that was sold at his estate sale to Hahn Farms in Stratford. It was #420183 and had a gasoline manifold and cut down rear rims. Is it possible this is the tractor you found?

Tom, I don't know because I haven't seen the tractor yet, but I'll sure keep your information in mind. Mike in Exeter Ontario
