Many thanks for the help with the first question but now for part 2. The reason I'm doing this is over the last 4 years the trans oil dipstick level has slowly gone from high to low so I want to top it up. I removed that filler nut as we discussed but I could only add about a tablespoon's worth of oil and then the oil level was up to the top of the filler hole (where I had just removed the nut from) and it didn't go down. Any ideas on why this would be?

I am in the same boat as Craig... my levels went down on the stick, but when I took the plug out, it appeared to be full to the top. Why is the stick reading low?

Craig, I believe the plug that needs to be removed takes a 1 1/16th inch wrench. I have removed it a couple of times to access the gears to correct a "Stuck in gear" problem. You should be able to see your gears. Jack, are we talking about the same thing? Also, thanks for the tip on the gasket. Mine does not have one. I keep it in a shed, but a gasket would certainly be better.

Well now I feel like a bit of a clown - that wouldn't be the plug with the word 'Oil' stamped on it would it. In my defence I could say I thought it said '710'. Thanks again for the advice guys.....

Hi Craig -

I think there's some confusion about which bolt head here. The oil filler cap is a plug about 2" in diameter with a hex head about 1" across, just to the left of the shift levers.

When you open it, you have a hole about 1 1/2" dia to pour the oil in, and you can see some of the transmision gears and shifting rails down in the hole.

The plug originally had a heavy paper gasket to seal it. If it goes missing, water will get into the transmission around the plug. I make a new gasket, others use silicon caulking to reseal it.

Good luck!

Jack
