FE 35 Headlights

I just purchased a 52 MF FE 35 and it has no headlights - in fact no lights at all. The switch and wiring seem to be in place but lights were removed by the previous owner. There appears to be two mounting holes on each side of the top of the hood - all the photos I have seen so far have the lights mounted at the side not the top.
Am I missing something?

Bob

Hi Bob
David is correct, in that if a front loader is fitted to the FE 35 the booms foul the lights, so they were fitted on top of the bonnet out of the way. There was also another fitting used utilising a triangular bracket fixed to the side ( like a shelf bracket) but it was hinged so that you could fold the lights back against the side of the bonnet so that the loader boom could pass without fouling the lights

Hey Bob.. starting in on the tinkering aye?
Yeah, those two dimples on the front and sides of the hood are the headlight holders. kind of a cup shaped affair so you could point the lights wherever you wanted. Mine doesn't have any either but like the following note mentions it's because of the loader.. instead, there's two headlights mounted on the loader grille. I don't know where you can get direct replacements, but I have seen a nice set of halogens at my local Murrays auto parts store. Even have the little ball/nut end that would fit right into the original dimples.
So, now that you've got it in the barn, tell me about the new beast. I pulled mine into the barn a couple of days ago.. heading for a valve/ring job. But, just before that I gave it a little run through its paces (knocked over a stand of Sumac and widened the culvert 'drive-over'). Man, do these little tractor have the balls! 8" of snow, 50% tires and I still got the impression this tractor could have lifted my polebarn and moved it to the other side of the field!
Well, seems like my fifteen minutes of solitude are over for the day.. kids are hollering for me again.
Later, Al

Hey, you can move barns with them too - or at lesat garages. We did. We had a single garage to move that was made of asbestos cement sheets on angle iron frame. We had the loader on the front with the fork on and put what's called a buck rake in the UK on the back. We took the exhaust off and reversed inside then sut the garage door. We got the tines under the farme front and back and lifted. I drove and the guy whose garage it was directed me through the garage window. We didn't have to go more than a few yards but it did work ok.

David:
Now that is a great story! I can just see the look on a passer-bys face.. watching a garage trundling along, a guy walking next to it hollering ".. a little left.. that's it.. just a few more feet!". Ha, he's telling that story to his grandkids right now!
Got a note from Big Dean. He mentions that the front axles on the 35's are a little light for a loader.. that he's had to fix more than a few bent axles. Can't say as I disagree with him. I got a MF200 loader on my MF35. Full calcium in the rears and the cast iron donuts bolted on to keep the back end on the ground. When I load the bucket up, I can just hear those spindly front laigs looking over their shoulder at me saying, "You ain't gonna make me do this too often are you?". I build manufacturing machines for a living. I'm in awe of the robustness, simplicity and shear common sense of the design built into these little tractors.

Great tribute to these machines .... and thanks for the lights info. I don't see any sign of there having been a loader on my 35 so I wonder if it might have been the original intention and never followed through. I hope so for the sake of the font end - I have a larger 4WD tractor with a loader so I don't need the 35 to be stressed out by this.
Still tinkering but it is really cold and windy today so the fingers only last about 5 minutes.

I think they normally fix to brackets fixed to the side of the bonnet but I have seen at least one 35x where they were fitted on top of the bonnet. Don't think this was the original design but I may be wrong, as it runs in my mind that they had to go on top if a front end loader was fitted because the side mounted lights fouled on the loader boom. Not sure. Somre one else might be able to tell you more.
