Well, I just got my "new to me" 35 deluxe home and have a starter key question. It is a perkins diesel engine and the tractor was built in Coventry England.

The key has four positions - HS - is about 12 oclock
H - is around 1:30
O - is about three oclock
S is at 4 oclock

The key rests at H and starts the tractor at HS.
Are the other positions for preheating or ???

Thanks for any help.

I expect I'll have a load of new questions once I get some time to play on this new old machine.

Thanks gentlemen - very helpful. A couple of further questions from the "35 rookie". Once the tractor is started at the "HS" position does the key spring back to "O" - I am having some difficulty "feeling" the different positions and, as Jack said, the ring has shifted.

Now, while I am waiting for my service manual to arrive (ordered it last week), does anyone have a copy of the wiring diagram from the key to the preheater that they could e-mail me or provide a link to - I thought Big Dean had one on his photo site but I've lost the link.

Thanks
Bob

The letters are probably on a metal plate which has rotated around the key switch.

O=off
H=preheat
HS=preheat and start
S=start without heat

The "O" position should line up with the key at rest.

In the H and HS positions, current should be directed from one key switch terminal to the thermostart (mini blowtorch) on the intake manifold, or through a resistor to the glow plugs on the Standard 4 cyl.

In the S and HS positions, current flows through another terminal through the neutral safety switch to the starter solenoid.

The third terminal is for input power, usually wired to the ammeter. That's helpful to see if the preheater is working or not. It was sometimes wired direct to the hot terminal on the ammeter (bypassing it) to keep the ammeter from pinning (full deflection) with the heavy current draw.

Provided..... the key switch is the original 3 terminal configuration, and wired correctly!

And thanks for the roses!

Jack

You should also be aware that "off" is located between the start position and the heat position. To start without heat it should turn one postion clockwise. Normally if its a Standard 23c diesel engine it will need heat to start it. That means turning it one notch anticlockwise from off to supply the manifold heater plug then after about 15 - 20 seconds turning it another notch to the HS position. If the heater plug is working you will feel the metal start to get warm around where it screws into the manifold. As it heats up it lets diesel flow from the small cylinder on the flange at the at the back of the fuel tank and if all is well you should hear a slight "whoomff" noise (is that how you spell it?) as the diesel ignites in the manifold. I usually give it another second or two after I hear that then try to start it. The 23c can be hard to start. We used to drain ours each night in winter and fill it with hot water in the morning which helped to get it going.
