MF 135 diesel. I am having trouble removing rear
break drums. I cannot budge the 2 retaining, large
flat head screws holding the drum to the axle. I
have tried Liquid Wrench, heat and brute strength.
I will need new drum brakes if I get the drums off. Any ideas?

Marshall - I once restored a Ferguson that had sat out in the rain and snow for a long period. There was a great deal of rust. I tried nearly every trick in the book to get the brake drum retaining screws out. I finally drilled them out with successively larger bits. Don't do this, however, until you have located replacements. If you need replacements, e-mail me and I can give you some sources for good used ones.

After and only after all else has failed, weld a hex nut (preferably unplated) to the head of the screw. Hold the nut over the screw and weld the INSIDE of the nut to the screw. Use a nut large enough to move your electrode around in. Don't overheat the nut or it will melt and drip to the ground. If the weld holds, the screw will come out with a wrench on the nut. If the screw is Cadmium plated and/or grade XX hard you will have to put a tack weld on the top of the screw for penetration then weld the nut to the tack weld. I had to use this welded nut trick to get the knives out of my M-F hay baler.

Have you checked the manual to make sure both have right hand threads? I say this because I'm working on a Model 12 hay baler and found left hand threads on the screw holding the flywheel on.

Marshall... I use a 1/2 drive screwdriver impact driver and sometimes the extra heat is necessary. Usually they will screw right out. Use a Heavy Hammer.... Hit em Hard....

Lots O Luck....
