Kudos Big Dean & Hamish. I'ts a pleasure to hear from people who know what their talking about. I like Big Dean's explanation for the occasional anomaly in 'what a tractor is, and what the S/N plate says'. (see below). Thanks guys.
Anybody want to start a discussion on the letters in the Perkins S/N? Mine is CL224767.. apparently an older Indirect Injected, Chrome sleeved cylinder.

From: Big Dean

Here is what I have for the Prefix letters in the Massey Ferguson serial numbers as I understand the later US built tractors the D was for Diesel engines. Hope this might help answer your question on the prefix letters. I have found a lot of them that these did not always hold true but I think that is because in the late 1970 & early 1980 there were so many of the old tractors put back together from salvage yards & sold at the big tractor auctions then at that time the tractor jockeys were selling anything they could put their hands on just as fast as they could assemble them. hope some of this information will be of help.
Serial number prefixes letter
Chassis
S for Normal width
V for vineyard
J for Industrial C for High clearance

G for gasoline
H for high altitude

B for LPG

F for Single M for Dual
others Y diff lock

WAAALL, I guess I'd better weigh in.
The S/N on my 2135 is SGM64001288. By 10 Mile's chart it should be a non industrial with dual clutch, gas engine and normal width. Now I always thought that a 2135 WAS an industrial. Is it?
It does have a gas engine and dual clutch, but it also has a diff lock. Whut's thu deal?

Here is what my MF50 factory manuals show:

1st Space - Chassis Type
S - Utility
R - Row Crop Twin
T - Row Crop Single
C - Hi Arch
J - Multi-Purpose

2nd Space - Fuel Type
N - Diesel
G - Gas
B - L.P.
H - Hi-Altitude Gas

3rd Space - Clutch Type
F - Single
M - Double

Having said that, I have a look at my S/N plate and it reads SNW - go figure!

Though my MF50 appears to be completely original and appears to have original paint - I sometimes wonder if was not, some time ago, built from other tractors. For example, I am told that in 1962, the MF50 had the AD3-152 direct diesel. Mine has the A3-152 indirect diesel. 1962 models, if equiped, used the newer style power steering cylinder arrangement which mine has. My S/N, via the "W" implies Multi-Power, but I see no evidence that it was ever there. There is a slot on my dash where the MP lever might have been, however, there ain't no lever or any sign one has ever been there. What else external to the tractor would indicate multi-power? I simply don't know! I do know that my tractor has the double clutch. It also has engine and ground pto.

The good news is (knock on wood) is that my tractor appears to be a good one! As we renew this thing, fluids, filters, adjustments, etc, I am impressed with the simplicity and common sense of this design.
