I have a 1953 Massey Harris Mustang Row Crop (23CIRS 3307) that has a vertical muffler. All the pictures I've seen show Mustangs with the horizontal exhaust. Would this be original ? The manifold is definately set up for vertical and the sheet-metal appears original (hasn't been butchered) Any opinions?

My Mustang has a vertical muffler, and the hood was 'butchered" to do it. It looks like a longer piece of pipe (like schedule 40) than the original - the previous owner told me it had simply screwed out - was inserted into the manifold, then a short piece of muffler pipe slid over the threaded pipe, and the muffler then clamped to this piece.

A plate in the owner's manual shows a horizontal muffler with the "inlet" slightly to the right of the middle point of the muffler. The exhaust goes out the left end, and a pipe then heads downwards. That is why there is a heat shroud on the inside of the right side, and insulation between the heat shroud and the metal side. The plate also shows a manifold heat control lever, and a separate shroud - with three bolts - that covers the manifold.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Mike - I've been told that Massey sometimes just assembled tractors from excess parts inventory , so maybe that's what happened here because the manifold and hood seem to be original. By the way , my serial # is 3307.
