Just got my first MF, a 35 Deluxe, waiting for the gaskets and filters.. out with the old, in with the new. The starting key has four positions. Spring CW: warm start?. 1st spring CCW: Thermostat in the Intake manifold or glow plugs? 2nd spring CCW: Cold start, after 10-15 seconds of 1st spring CCW. Now, there's a black pull-out knob on the same plate as the key switch. Underneath it, it says START in big black letters. Anybody know what that does? -or- is it that James Bond ejection seat business, and I shouldn't fool with it?

Thanks guys.. I think I'm going to have to go with 'brian' and 'Chris C' on this. I pulled it out and nothing happened (thank god the seat didn't fling me into Kansas either). Buttons and Knobs.. there's quite a set of 'em on this thing. Just below the 'Start' plate, is another key switch. The guy who sold me this tractor mentioned that it may be the light switch (that's two). On the right side of the dash, just above the Multi-Power shift lever is a spring loaded pushbutton.. it's gotta' be for the horn someone mounted on the loader (an MF 200.. came with the tractor). Just above that is another push-pull knob, this one is white (that's three). Unfortunately, none of these devices seem to do anything (there's gotta be fuses somewhere). There's a set of lights on the heavy duty grille that bolts to the engine case (holds up the front end of the loader and mounts the hydraulic pump). There's another set of lights on the loader support uprights on either side of the cockpit, and finally there's another set of lights mounted on 2 ft uprights off the fenders. These point to the rear and have the neatest rotating red lense. Kinda like a cowl that you can rotate down and use for taillights or up to see where you're going in reverse.
Sigh.. everything points to a job I've been procrastinating about.. new front seal for the crankshaft damper. To get at it, I've got to pull the loader off, and walk the axle away. At least then I'll be able to lift the hood forward, pull the tank and battery and get a look at where all those wires go (thing's even got one of them flasher switches dangling down from the wiring.. wonder what flashes?.. wonder what turns it on?!? Man! maybe this things got air-conditioning!). Is anyone familiar with that little chrome tube just in front to the steering column that kinda' bends over the tach? I'm pretty sure it's a light, but does it have a bulb in the housing or like a fiber optic tube that brings light in from somewhere else? Sure wished I knew what made that one work too.

Seems like this is going to be the "Winter of Fixin the 35". I'll keep you posted.

Assuming you still have the original ignition switch on the tractor, full counterclockwise is the off position, first click clockwise is the run position, second click clockwise is the Run, Front lights AND the dash light (little chrome tube you mentioned above the steering wheel column) if you look you'll see that it is smaller in diameter at where it comes out of the dash and gets bigger towards the area it is above the guages(that's where the lightbulb is located), the end will pull off to allow access to the bulb. But to get back to the main ignition switch the third click clockwise is Run, All lights including the rear light if there is still one on the left fender, Fuses will be somewhere under the dash inside INLINE fuse holders, some after market REAR lights had a fuse holder on the "hot" wire close to the rear light itself. Hope this helps you out

That little chrome tube is the light for the gauges, on mine the socket is all corroded away, guess I"ll have to try to find a replacement someday.
