Sticking brakes on a 135

I have an early 60's MF 135 that gets only occasional use for light chores; tends to spend weeks at a time covered under a tarp until something comes up that I can't put off doing. Went out today to push last nights snow off of the driveway and parking lot. When I finished warming it up and tried to pull off, I found the right rear wheel was locked up. Went in reverse OK, so I rocked it a few times and it freed up and I completed the snow removal fine. Am I correct in assuming that the brakes were locked on that wheel ( I had left it parked with the brake lock engaged ) and is there some kind of maintenance I should do to avoid this in the future ( or just use the tractor more )? Or am I completely wrong and it is some other problem entirely? Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks. Dr. D

Recommend you do not leave the brake on while parked for preiod of time. Block the wheels instead.

Dr. D
I have found that light rust from non-use are relatively normal and have not caused sticking brakes in my tractors. What has caused some occaisional sticking is leaking seals that have coated the brakes very lightly with oil. When the leak is minor, the oil can thicken and get sticky and has caused some sticky brakes on my tractors. The other problem that has occurred on one of my tractors is worn brakes and actuating parts. When some of these parts get worn, the actuator gets too close to the over-center point and has trouble returning to normal when released.

Hi Dr. D. I don't know but I would suspect condensation around drum and or slight rust but I tend to think the previous since the tractor is tarped. The limited use does not help the situation when using the tractor but I would worry more to bring it up to operating temp. for the sake of engine more than brakes.

In any case, next time you use it you can drag the brakes hence heating the liner and drum to evaporate moisture and or park in a heated garage overnight. Make sure brake linkage is free in its movement. The best friend any equipment has in cold or hot temps when parked is a well ventilated environment. As a suggestion you could build a rudimentary 2 x 4 frame just enough for the tractor to fit and tarp the frame thereby allowing the best drying condition.

Of course you could inspect the drums allowing it to dry as well and verify the integrity for any other potential problem.

Long winded sorry, Good Luck
