Hot exhaust-Need help before snow storm!

I have a MF TO35, 1957. The exhaust pipe glowed bright red, starting just under the manifold, even before engine warmed up. Soon after, the exhaust manifold also became bright red. I had just rebuilt carb.

I removed the exhaust pipes and blew with air- it is free. I also opened mixture screw 1/2 turn. It seems a little better, but still very hot. Maybe the air cleared the muffler, but I don't think it was ever clogged.

The governer is racing the engine at idle- I think this is a separate problem, because even when I held idle to 1200 RPM with the lever, pipes still got red.

Does anyone have any ideas? Can it be the carb? I am using summer blend gas, could this have an effect?

Note: it was dark out, and might not have looked so bad in daylight, but I still do not think this is normal.

The red exhaust manifold is caused by retarded ignition timing, It will also cause it to be hard on fuel and lack power, Adjust the point gap and lube the points rubbing block then set the timing with a timing light (point gap needs to be set first because it affects the ignition timing) The timing mark is on the left side of the engine on the flywheel, there is about a 1" hole in the front of the bellhousing, set it to specs.

It was the timing. Thanks Greg, and everyone else for your help!

Kevin, It does not sound normal. I would give Big Dean a holler and see what he thinks.

The excessive exhaust temp. and the fast idle together sound like an air leak on the intake. Possibly at the gasket at the head or carb. It could have a crack also, that would cause the same symptoms. Either way it would cause a lean burn situation.

Try spraying a little WD-40 or similar item around all the possible leaky areas while engine is idling and still cool. If it is already glowing red that might not be a good thing to spray WD-40 on! heh heh

Good luck
