I think the Hydraulic unit is shot on the Masssey.

1) Checked fluid, the level was fine but I did notice it looked a little milky. I am wondering if water got into the case somehow and mixed with the oil and the water froze the pump and damaged it?

2) I noticed that when I disconnected the plow the three point would not got all the way down, so I moved it in the garage and turned the heat on and after about an hour it dropped down all the way. I am guessing it only moved about 3-4 inches but it still was hung up on somthing.

3) Now, I fire up the massey and try to move the plow up and down and nothing happens except I do hear a faint noise like a bubbling noise or somthing.

4) I shut off the engine and manually lift the three poit and there is no resistance what so ever, and I can go from stop to stop. It's dead. I did notice somthing. when I get somewhere in the middle of the travel of the three point, I can feel a metallic clicking noise, It is very faint but definitly repeatable.

5) This is my diagnosis>>>>>>> Maybe a relief valve is stuck open? Filter plugged? Broken parts$$$$$$?

You can get transdraulic fluid at TSC, Wal-mart and others, look at the specs on the back of the can for the Massey spec of M1129A. My 165 takes 8 gallons, not sure about yours.

I left it in the heated garage all day, and low and behold it was working fine. After I was done I pulled the pto side cover off and there was some ice build up still in the case. so, I drained the fluid, I looked like a vanilla milkshake. I am going to replace the shifter boots because they are dry rotted. What fluid do you all recommend.

Thanks Jim

Jim,
Hydraulic fluid for these is a hotly debated topic. They originally had 80W mineral oil which was about the same viscosity as 30W engine oil. I have never had any problem with using THF (tractor hydrualic fluid) which is what is called for in later tractors. I get it at my local parts house but can be purchased at any good fuel & oil place or at NAPA. It should hold seven gallons. It can be difficult to get all of the water out with the first oil change. I have run a couple of gallons of diesel through the trans and rearend to flush out the old fluid. Any way you do it there still be some amount of old fluid left in the nooks and crannies but don't worry about it.

You can check a couple of things pretty quickly. Remove the cover from the right side of the hydraulic case. It's the one with the dipstick in it just forward of the right axle housing. You will be able to see the hydraulic pump thru the hole. The actuator lever will be right there close to the hole. You can start the tractor and move the actuator to make the pump move fluid to the three point hitch. I think that forward on the lever is the way to go. If this makes the system work then the problem is with the control linkage. With implements like a plow or ripper, a good deal of force can be placed on the third link spring assembly. Sometimes if that boot on the third link is bad there will be an accumulation of dirt and crud that can jam the draft contol pin so that the hydraulics won't work. If this is the case. I would remove the thrid link spring assembly to clean the crud and install a new boot. This just happened top one of my tractors and I was about to remove the cover from the top of the hydraulics to inspect the linkage. After thinking about it I went after the third link instead and save a lot of work. If you decide that you want to do this let me know and I can run through the details of that.

(1) Milky fluid is definitly water, most of the time it enters via of the boots on the gear and range shiftlevers. The rain and snow falls on the shift levers and runs down into the trans, replace the boots and change the trans fluid.

(2) The lift arms will go lower if you use the draft control lever for the lowest position.

(3) Could be a plugged hydraulic filter. Does the PTO work OK? The same shaft drives the PTO and the hydraulic pump. Some 35s have engine and ground speed PTO, if the ground PTO works and engine doesn't, most likely the 2nd stage of the clutch is out of adjustment or shot.

(4) The 3 point has a one way cylinder that just pushes on a heavy duty ram, the click you hear is the ram as it falls out of a cup shape piston, the ram is long enough so it doesn't hurt anything and just goes back into the cup shape piston when you let the lift arms down again.
