TO 35 and PTO

I have been working hard to get this straight and I think I understand but ....
Last week I called two different folks who had TO 35's for sale. Both advertised "Live PTO" which I assumed meant a two stage clutch where the PTO (and hydraulics) would continue to operate when the clutch was pushed down to the first stage. When the clutch was fully disengaged (all the way down) the PTO (and hydraulics) would not operate. Neither tractor had the two stage clutch feature

So, my question(s) 1 - am I wrong thinking that live PTO should automatically mean two stage clutch?
2 - if this is not the case, what do I need to ask a seller to make sure I don't waste a trip (plus their time and mine) to look at a tractor that does not have the two stage clutch feature.

Is this only available in the 35 Deluxe models?

Thanks for any insights.

Hi Douro Bob I think the only way to settle the score with the sellers is to ask them the same you ask here ie; "Both advertised "Live PTO" which I assumed meant a two stage clutch where the PTO (and hydraulics) would continue to operate when the clutch was pushed down to the first stage. When the clutch was fully disengaged (all the way down) the PTO (and hydraulics) would not operate. Neither tractor had the two stage clutch feature"

What you assumed is correct as I have a TO 35 deluxe and it operates as what you describe here.
But a question pops for your last sentence, " Neither tractor had the two stage clutch feature"?
Which tractors the one you're looking at?

Good Luck

Hi Norm
My wish list is a 35 with 2 stage clutch where the PTO (and hydraulics) would continue to operate when the clutch was pushed down to the first stage. When the clutch was fully disengaged (all the way down) the PTO (and hydraulics) would not operate. Power steering would be a desireable option. Also $$$ and shipping is a factor. Do you have a lead or two??

Hi Douro, Well there is this small MF dealer in Sarsfield Ont. that is or will be rebuilding a TO 35 from two units. They are reputable and been there a long time. Their father sold a tea 20 1948 to my father back then and the TO35 I own comes from there also. Anyway I called them last week end and they told me of the rebuild. Depending where you live it might be interesting.
I shall visit them this week and will ask the basic questions for you. Send me your email to mine above.

Good Luck

Both right and wrong. In an "off the factory" '35, the closest you can get to a "live PTO" is the Dual Clutch feature with the hydraulic system following the PTO, but real live PTO is the PTO having totally separate clutch function, so that the PTO can be engaged/disengaged independant of hydraulics and drivetrain, thus the '35 being only partly "live".

live pto IS dual clutch. independant pto is not clutch related. dual clutch has two stages first turns inter input shaft for pto second turns outer shaft for driveline.if you engage the pto lever, put trans in gear and start letting out the clutch the pto will start turning before the tractor starts moving then you have live pto. good luck. wouldn't trade my mf35 for 3 8n's

If I understand correctly not all 35's are even partly live because some do not have the 2 stage clutch.

Bob
You are right that the two stage clutch is the same as saying "live PTO". You are also right in that the two stage clutch is a standard feature on the delux TO35. It might just be my geographical area (CA foothills orchard country) but I have never seen a basic TO35. Around here they all seem to be delux. I have also found that many casual tractor owners don't know the difference. Bob
PS I have a beautiful TO35 Delux gas model for sale.

Wonder how much it would cost for trucking to postal code K0L 1S0 in central Ontario Canada.

Bob,
I would have no idea on the trucking costs. I would think that they would make the deal too costly. Just for your info. The basic tractor is US$3500. My zip code is 95667, just east of Sacramento CA.
