I have an Mf35 deluxe. The transmission seems a little rough when engaging the gears(especially compared to an 8n ford I've used).I've found if I put the tractor in gear while leaving the hi-low stick in neutral, then engage the hi-low stick,it goes into gear much smoother.I wondered if this was normal.

Thanks for any help.Jeb

If you have multi-power, it can act as a hill holder when in high range that make for really tough shifting.

The transmission is not synchronized or constant mesh, the gears are straight cut gears and slide to mesh and unmesh, they don't always go straight in.

Otherwise tough shifting probably is a sign of the clutch not releasing fully. That can come from misadjustment (too much free play), a warped clutch plate, goop on the clutch plate, or a failing pilot bearing.

Make sure you have the right amount of free play before you get wild with the other stuff. You can polish a sticky clutch plate that's not warped by putting the tractor in the highest gear, locking the brakes (maybe with the nose solidly against a LARGE tree) and slipping the clutch until it gets hot. You can also warp the clutch plate by overdoing the heating.

I have a MF35, and have noticed the same thing about shifting the transmission. I can easily shift between gears (forward and reverse), if I first move the high/low range shifter to neutral. Then shift the high/low to the appropriate range.
Without doing that, I get significant gear clash.
I hate that!!!!

Do you notice any difference between having the engine at idle versus say, half-throttle? That's what I see with my MF TO35 and I've been told that it could be the throw-out bearing going bad.

I have a 35 Deluxe, and it shifts easily through all ranges.

I have a Ferguson TO35 Deluxe and it shifts on the hard side also but I have a friend that has one also and it shifts so easy I can't believe it. My 8N's shift easy too.
