I have just purchased TE20 Ferguson 1949.It starts and runs great...smokes but that's ok. It seems to require VERY little effort to get the rpm's too high. It "runs up" really quickly. The compression is even accross all cylinders but I'm wondering if it's not just so loose from years of use and no use that it's doing this. I'm sure it could use a rebuild..but it will not likely get one while I own it. Do you think that it speeds up in rpm so fast just because it's worn out or is there another problem? Thanks!

How does it act under load? If it can maintain the higher rpm level, then it is getting sufficient fuel to handle the load. That means that the butterfly in the carb is open far enough to supply the fuel and the governor is working properly. If this is the case, the linkage to the carb probably needs adjustment. Look if there is a place where you could make a linkage arm longer. This would allow more throttle arm travel for corresponding butterfly travel. I could be wrong, but I never heard of a loose engine being a bad thing! Good luck, let me know what you think.
