I recently bought a Fergison TE20 with a thrown rod in the motor, that is not repairable. I was not able to find a replacement so my father found a Continental flathead four out of a Massey 102Jr. We intend to fit it to the TE20. It needed a lot of work but was rebuildable, we found a chrysler flat head 6 that had oversized pistons that were identical to the four cyl's originals and had the engine bored to fit. What I need to know is what is this engine called so I can get a manual for it, so I have the specs when I put it together and know I am assembling it properly. Dad says that it is the same motor that is in his Massey 30. I keep coming accross the name 162 but some manual name the 162 as a L head, is that designation mean a flathead. Sure would hate to order the wrong manual. Any Idea who has the best manual on that motor. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Richard Hauk(Rimbey, Alberta)

This 162 engine is the same as in the Lincoln Welders. It is very similar to the 163 but there are some differences. The parts are getting scarce but you can get manuals from Lincoln Welder and Continental Engines, Foley Engines and others.
Good Luck

Rimbey ! Well I'm not too far away from you, just east of Edmonton in Sherwood Park. Yes, the 162 designation is correct. Actually that 4 cylinder flathead is Continental's F400 series of engine. It showed up in lots of agricultural (eg. Massey Harris) and industrial (eg. Lincoln welders) applications, some automotive too I think. That is the L-head version which is another designation for a flathead where both the intake and exhaust valves are in the block, side by side on the same side of the pistons. That engine also showed up with smaller cylinder bores as a 124 and 140 cubic inch. The piston diameters were 3", 3 3/16" and 3 7/16" for the three sizes. There were also some industrial versions of 135 and 163 cubic inches. Email me at the above blue-colored email link, I've got some stuff here that you might be interested in getting.
