Need help! My MF65 decided not to start today. Cleaned all batt. conections, charged batt., and all it will do is click at the relay. I get voltage to the starter and checked my neutral switch. Any ideas? Bad starter? Any advice would be much appreciated. John

I recently had problems like you describe.
I changed the starter brushes and cleaned the
scale off the solenoid plunger and now alls well.

Does the starter get warm quickly when you try to start it in it's current condition? If it does it means that its a low voltage problem. This can be due to a loose or dirty electrical connection. I recently had a Fordson Dexta that I thought I was up for a new starter. What I ended up doing was to clean up ALL electrical connections attached to any part of the startyer system. I also dismantled the starter & used a piece of hacksaw blade to carefully scratch out the divisions on the commutattor. ( the area that the replaceable "brushes" sit on )There is an insulation substance that separates the copper sections & mine had become filled in with? copper i suppose from the brushes. That done, I reinstalled the unit & after making sure all connections were cleaned or replaced as necessary I tried to turn over the motor. Having just rebuilt the old girl I assumed I'd have to bleed the fuel system before she'd start & was only trying to see if the engine would crank over on the starter. I got the shock of My life... not only did she crank over at a great rate of knots...on the third revolution...she STARTED.... frightened the proverbial out of Me.
Anyway, enough rambling from Me, what I'm trying to say is, pull it all apart, carefully and clean it all up & give it a try before spending big bucks on a replacement. Good luck ..:8^)

Check your starter solenoid. Replacement is only 12-15 dollars.

Hi John, You could have a starter problem. However it could also be a poor ground. I have run into the same thing. Had to clean the surface areas where the starter comes in contact with the block. If you are getting voltage to the starter post Those are the two things to look for. My bet is you have a bad ground. Take the starter off and clean up the surface areas. Hope this helps. Good luck. Let us know how you make out. Dave
