I finally found a nice MF 135 but it doesn't have p/s. I really wanted that feature so my wife could drive it easily, and so that I wouldn't experience that thing my Ford 2N does when I backup with a heavy load hanging off my 3pt hitch. You know where the steering wheel gets wrenched out of your hands and the front wheels swing hard to one side or the other? Can anyone tell me if a MF 135 w/o ps steers fine under load, or whether I should just keep on looking until I can find one with it? These models seem kind of rare up here in the NW, at least in my price range.
Thanks, Casey

I'm in Tacoma, can you lead me to the MF35 that you did not buy?

I have a '66 MF135 diesel with power steering. In my opinion ,I think you more satisfied waiting on a unit with it since you have made the choice to purchase another tractor.I 've been in some tight spots that were made easier by not having to wrestle that steering wheel! There is an aftermarket add-on that I've seen for about a steep $1,000(bareco I think).Good Luck!

I am very satisfied with my 70 model 135. I agreed with you though, power steering would be nice, but mine's not to bad without it. No front end loader on mine, and if your going to use one, I would think you would need it.....Bill in TN

Hi Casey -

I've had both Ford 9N/8N and MF 35/135 without power steering. The MF series steering seems solider, and less likely to "kick" under the conditions you mention.

Don't be afraid to go with the non ps units.

And you might find the 35 worth looking at. Basically the same tractor, probably $500 - $1000 cheaper. The 135 has "square" tin, and a few refinements (heavier front spindles, constant pumping in the 3-point system, slightly refined engine with direct fuel injection for examples) but nothing to get excited about.

We're still running 4 of the 35's, all Perkins diesel, and for my money, they're probably the best tractors in that hp size ever built.

Those Perkins diesels are still - 40 years later - among the most fuel efficient on the market.

Good hunting, and let us know how you make out.

Thanks for the tips. I settled on the 135 because of the reputation of the Perkins diesel and the misguided belief that they all had p/s, but I may reconsider the 35 as an option. These too seem to be rare around here. I'll let you know what I come up with.
Thanks again, Casey
