I was jsut wondering about how much horsepower a 44 4 cylinder is supposed to be. Also I was wondering what are small things you can do to gain some. For pulling I know I need balance but what about getting a little more HP.

JT -

The biggest bore (from a "kit") that you can put into the stock sleeve hole (without boring the block) is 4.0625in. There are no 4.125in bore kits! Anything bigger than 4.0625in bore will require custom (or other OEM) sleeves and pistons AND boring the block.

I have built several 277 cubic inch (4" overbored H260's) that pump out 70+ HP at stock RPM +10%. This can be accomplished reletively easily and inexpensively. Email me for more information...

Thanks for the advice, so all I need is to go to 4" and +10% RPMS and it should get a 44 to 60 or 70hp,WOW! Thats unreal, being that they are only 45hp stock. I was worried that I would need to bore it to see much difference.

Thanks

Yes! That is the ghist of it, but there is a little more work than that to it! With the additional modifications and some dyno tuning, 70+ HP is within reach...

Marlowe -

With all due respect, a 4.00in or 4.063in over bore is not what tractor pullers consider to be "big bucks". If it is a "kit" that can be readily put into a still working tractor, then it SHOULD NOT be considered big bucks...

5.00" bore with a 7.5 stroke", now that is big bucks....

P.S> I am not trying to flame anyone, I just want people to realize that HP is not easy to get and that there is a price to pay when you play. Otherwise, leave it in the Parade.

thanks for the help. But I was wondering what it would cost to bore it to 4.063 and what kind of horsepower would that give the 44

you dont have to bore it because is has removeable wet sleeves. You can get 4" overbore sleeve kits and have heard of 4 1/8 kits E mail Don livingston at [email protected] he has sleeve kits. hope this helps! You could order the 4" kits at most major auto parts houses.

I was just wondering what kind of 4 inch pistons would go in a 44. Because I dont know what kind of pistons I need if I get 4inch sleeves. Also, How much would it cost to get the pistons and where could I get them.

4" Is stock bore for a 44 Special or 444 tractor to give you 277 CID. Try to find the 4 1/8 M&W kit that will not only give you bigger bore, but high dome pistons for greater compression.

Later....

Where can I find M&W pistons and about how much would 4.25 be. I know it would have to be bored but that could make some CI.

I just looked in my book and the maximum horsepower is 44. A few ways of increasing the horsepower are: 1. Remove the air cleaner hose from the carberator, 2. Run the highest grade of gasoline, and mix Octane booster in the tank, and 3. If you want, boost the rpm to 10% over the regular rate.
