how much tractor (weight) can I get away with hauling behind my 2000 GMC 1/2 ton? It has 3:73 gearing and 275 HP. The springs are beefed up and transmission cooler added. The trailer I'm looking at weighs 3000# 12,000 GVW gooseneck. Just curious what experiences anyone has had?

Dale

Your truck is rated at pulling about 5-6000lbs safely...give yourself plenty of room to stop....steering is affected too, so slow as you go would be my motto. I drive a Chev 1 ton 4x4 Crewcab w/ extra engine and tranny cooling plus locking rear diff.
Good luck! Lynch

You don't worry so much about how much you can pull but how how fast you can stop with the weight you are pulling. 1/2 T pickup is fairly light so the weight will push your truck when stopping. Electric brakes are a must...but can't depend on them alone....give yourself lots of room to stop.
I pull with a 3/4 T Dodge Cummins and I'm going to a 1 T Dually because of the sway with single wheels on the rear-end.
That's my .02!

Dale, I have a MF35 with a 6 foot bushog that I load on a 16'trailer.I pull it with a 1/2 Dodge with a 318 and automatic. An educated guess would put the loaded trailer weight about 6000lbs.If on hilly curvy back roads the truck doesn't like it much, but on fairly flat terrain and at moderate speeds it's ok.Brakes are a must, especialy on the lighter duty trucks.I just take my time and try to drive real defensively. Good luck,Yankee in Tn.
