Gentlemen,

Posing questions for a co-worker who is buying a MF 135 and asked me to post this as he is "mechanically challenged".

What manuals are best for repair; factory or IT? I've used the IT on my Ford 8N, but also like the factory manuals as reference. I see on various websites the factory manual reprints are available but they are many more pages that the IT manuals and also priced about double as the IT. Do you get what you pay for, or is the cheaper IT the better manual?

Thanks in advance for any information.

Regards,
David

Get all three factory manuals for your tractor. The only reason to use other manuals is if the dealer cannot get the real ones for you. The Operator's Manual is useful, and the Repair Manual is very useful. But you MUST get the offical Parts Manual. This is where you get the necessary exploaded views to reassemble after the repairs. Also, you can save long waits at dealer because you can have all your part numbers ready - have parts man double check - and you get the correct parts this way.
So, in conclusion, don't pull a tight-a## and get the real manuals.

Working on an MF 135, an AC D17D, and my "new" MF255 I have found that the IT manuals assume that you pretty much know the tractor well. They often cover 3 or more similar tractors in a single document, making it at times difficult to determine what they are saying about your tractor. I have the same problem with Haynes manuals for cars and trucks, which cover several models over several years.

I am a technical writer who has been writing user guides, repair manuals, and maintenance manuals for nigh on 30 years and, based on lots of experiences with IT and Haynes, I strongly urge my employers to let me write manuals that are specific to a single product.

As factory manuals "tend" to be written for a single product, I'd highly recommend that your friend spend the extra money and buy the factory manuals.

Tony,

Tony (and all) - thanks for the information.

Tony, as an aside, I'm also a tech writer with 30+ years experience. Drop me an email and tell me some war stories :-)

Regards,
David

It is true. You do get whatyou pay for. It manuals are very good but nothing beats the original factory manual.
