Wondered if I could ask a quick question of the group regarding buying an older MF for a small horse farm. It is only six acres. Tractor would need to do the normal horse chores (sling manure, dig post holes, bush hog, push rocks around, pull vines out of trees, etc.).

I have several friends with MF 35's. I think that's probably about what I'm looking for. Enough power to pull things. Not so big that my wife can't drive it (even though she's pretty tough). Small enough to get into tight places. I borrowed one last weekend to dig post holes last weekend and except for the fact that it had a brand new clutch, it was a pleasure. Wish he'd replaced the clutch AFTER I borrowed it.

Any particular suggestions about what to look for in a 35? I think I'd prefer diesel to gas, but are there any other things to look for or stay away from w/ the 35? There isn't a really great comprehensive list of information on the internet that I can find.

Also, what about some of the other models? Such as the 65. Obviously that will have more power, but is it going to get too heavy for my wife to drive it? Too big to squeeze into tighter places. Also, pro's/con's of spending a bit more on a 135 or one of the other newer tractors?

Thanks for all your help. I'm pretty set on getting a MF, so hopefully I'll be on the list a bit in the future.

I have a MF 65 gas with no power steering, but it still turns easy. great tractor, got it for $1600 and all it needed was a paint job. I love it, the two stage clutch and 3-point, packs a lot of power! I also have a 35 gas utility with loader which is nice, but the loader is a little heavy for it (use implement on back when using loader) otherwise, nice tractors

My Dad has a MF 35 Diesel Deluxe, 1961 Model...He used it for bush hogging, rotor tilling, and pulled bottom plows. I just now finished rebuilding the engine. The engine rebuild kit was about 400 and I had about 400 worth of machine shop work done. It had about 30 years of use with no major maintenance until this engine rebuild...He has said several times it is a very usefule tractor. He is older now and doesn't like it without power steering.

Bought my '64 MF35 Deluxe diesel last spring. Great choice. My wife who grew up driving an old Oliver sorta turned up her nose at the power steering - until she drove it! :) This is my first tractor and it's been all I could hope for. I don't have a front loader on it, and thought I'd want one, but lots of pros and cons on that in this group and others so that at this time, I think I'm just as happy it didn't come with one. Prices vary a lot depending on location and condition. I'm in Washington state and mine was $4200 - no implements, Perkins diesel was rebuilt at some time in the past, and it was slightly restored. Rubber was excellent. However, I'm expecting to rebuild the hydraulic system this winter, so even at a price that many said was high, it wasn't in top notch shape. But since then, I've seen 35 diesels at both more and less than mine was. Friend who helped me find this one was recommending an 8n like he had, when we stumbled onto my MF. Since then, he's envious of my MF. His 8n is restored and immaculate, but mine has live PTO and way more power.

Dean, I have a 1955 MF TO-35 and it is just about right for what you described. The TO-35 comes in both a gas and diesel model so you just have to look. For a place the size of yours a 35 HP should do the trick. Plenty of power, yet small and light enough for your wife to handle with no problems. Look out on E-Bay, I have seen a few out there. Just search for Massey Ferguson and you will find them. As far as options if you can find a 35 Deluxe that would be a bonus. The Deluxe has a 2 stage clutch and allows you to leave the live PTO running while you push the clutch in to shift (Half way down) Good hunting Joe

Thanks for the feedback. Actually, now that you mention it, the 35 I borrowed over the weekend was a Deluxe. I definately appreciate having a two-stage clutch.

What is parts availability and price like for a 35 (or other older MF).?

Thanks,
Dean

I paid $3700 USD for my 1964 FE35 deluxe. It included a brush hog and box blade. It has the 3 cyl Perkins diesel, dual clutch, and differential lock. I have had very little problem getting parts, although I had to search a little for the seat. Stevens Ag parts is one of several good suppliers. C. T.
