High, I purchased a 1964 MF 205 Ind with the Perkins indirect injection diesel. The engine was apart. I rebuilt the engine. I am an ASE certified master tech and I can assure you that all specks are proper, including injectors, compression and pump timing. I suspected that the engine would be loud, because of it's straight cut gears, generous clearances,as compaired to modern specs, and the fact that there is no piston pin offset. I used all perkins parts. The engine starts instantly and runs great, but it sporadically knocks untill it warms up. It sounds like a leaking injector knock. I checked the injectors and they are good, I ran the engine cold and bled off each injector in turn and all cylinders had equal power and the knock didn't go away. The knock goes away after the engine warms up. I suspect that this knock has something to do with the indirect injection. Is the cold knocking normal for the A3-152 Perkins? I have never heard one run,and have very little experience with diesils this old. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank You, Mike

My guess is you answered your own question when you commented on the generous clearances. These things run a little "loose" until they warm up to where the metal expands and takes out the slop. As long as your oil pump is up to snuff and you don't think any passages are clogged, probably nothing to worry about. Jim

Have you measured the compression ratio on the three cylinders?
My manual says 17.4:1
If OK & the injectors open at 120kp/cm2 (135 if new), and they spray evenly at the correct angles (30 and 80 degrees from centerline) I guess you will just have to live with it. Just be easy on the throttle when cold. Does it smoke?
If so, what colour? and does it disappear when hot?

Mike, The knock comes free with every engine of this type, it's just the nature of the beast. Ive had several tractors fitted with these engines and every one was the same. So long as the knock goes away when warmed up I dont think you have anything to worry about.

Mike, I have a 1962 MF50 with a A3D-152 Perkins diesel. In answering your one question I do not think that it being indirect rather than direct injection has anything to do with the knock. When I first start mine up it knocks and does get quieter as it warms up. I just take it easy until it is up to operating temp.(or close). I think myself it is "the nature of the beast" so to speak. I am certain you did a very meticulous job when rebuilding it so. I would run it for awhile and see if the knock gets any worse. Scott
