Getting ready to change the oil and get everything ready for winter on my tactor. All coolant was changed last week when I had a freeze plug start leaking which was replaced. The engine was rebuilt a few years ago, so I'm going back with detergent oil, but I cannot find an oil filter or cannister type filter on the engine. Were these produced without any type of filter for the engine oil? Also would anyone have an idea what the oil capacity for the engine is, and also how much gear lube the tranny and rearend holds? TIA

THE CHRYSLER ENGINE HAD A BY PASS TYPE FILTER SIMILAR TO THE OIL FILTERS USED ON EARLY CHEVY 6 CYLINDER ENGINES. NAMELY THE 216 AND 235 CU.IN. GAS ENGINE. WE HAD THE CHRYSLER ENGINE IN SOME MASSY 27, 90 AND 92 COMBIMES. WE WENT TO A CUMMINS ENGINE DISTRUBITOR AND PURCHASED A REMOTE FILTER HEAD FOR THEIE 777 OIL FILTER. THE FILTER CARRYS ABOUT 1 GALLON OF OIL AND HELPED IN ENGINE TEMP AS WELL AS AN OIL FILTER. IT IS HOOKED INTO THE MAIN OIL PRESSURE GALLEY AND THE RETURN WAS HOOKED INTO THE OIL FILL TUBE. THEY WORKED GREAT

Filters were often an option on these engines, but some were removed when the hose to it burst, and no-one wanted to mess with it anymore. They were usually just clamped on the manifold and were plumbed into the oil gallery.

Check the oil pan for a oil filter. Some of the old tracrors put their oil filter inside the oil pan to be accessed through a pretty good sized removable plate on the bottom of the pan.

I'm surprized that it doesn't have a canister-style filter. You could probably get one at any old wrecking yard that has old trucks like the old Dodges, etc. For oil capacity (assuming it has the original 201 cubic inch Chrysler engine in it) my manual says 5 quarts of engine oil, 4 gallons of coolant, and 24 quarts (6 gallons) of tranny oil. All of those are US measurements. I don't know if that engine oil quantity is with or without a filter.

Thank you ir, I found the reading of Capacity 5 quarts on the dipstick, so thats what I put in. Even without the filter it just came to the full mark. I appreciate the information, but I thought the Supers had a 217 Cu in, engine?

Yup, I looked a bit more and see that the original standard and rowcrop 101's used the 201 cubic inch version which would be the T57, T81, and T105 engine model numbers. Says here that they had a 3 1/8" bore. Then the 101 Supers with T-96 and T116 engine models had a 3 1/4" bore for the 217 cubic inches you mentioned. What was the difference between the original 101's and the Super 101's? Never did get that straight.
