When the battery on my 65 diesel gets a little
low, when trying to start it the engine will keep
turning over until you unhook the battery cable,
it was smoking pretty good the other night.A friend with a 65 gas says his does the same thing.
Kind of scary if the wife or kids try to use it.
Is this normal,or is there something I can fix?

You're right, it can be a little scary for anyone when you're not expecting it. LH is right on checking for proper charging. The reason they do this (usually) is: the lower the voltage, the higher the current draw. High current causes the connections in the selinoid to arc closed. Sometimes they'll let go just by removing the current (disconnecting the battery), sometimes they need a "love tap", and eventually they get to the point where they're junk. I had a boss one time that started his Ford van and ended up losing his starter & ring gear when this happened. Good luck - ALAN

Cars will do the same thing if the battery voltage get's low. Check oyur charging system to ensure it's putting out an adequate charge, check all your connections "Clean, bright, and tight" and then have you battery checked for a dead cell, or an internal short.
