My gasoline tractor starts like a dream everytime!(well until today) This morning as soon as I drove it in the barn it shut off by itself just as if it knew it was where it belonged. No freeze, no grind, no backfire, just a normal kill. Now when I try to start it, the engine turns and turns but does not even attempt to fire. Haven't checked the sparkplugs for a spark yet, but I just feel like something electrical is in the way. I checked the gas and have a few inches left in the tank(yes, my first step will be to add a few more gallons of gas). The gas cup below the tank appears to be full as far as I can see. Can I flood the engine like a car to ensure I'm getting fuel to the carb?(how?) Or can I run a wire directly from the battery to the coil to make sure I'm getting a spark? I would like to rule the electric or the fuel out right away. Thanks in advance.
(OK a little honesty-I did hook my lights up to the battery that same morning before I drove it into the barn. But the battery is still strong and the lights go directly to the battery using a toggle switch from the hardware store(no trip to the ignition switch). One wire did spark against the frame as I was hooking it up, but I ran the tractor after this happened. Disconnecting the lights did not help me). Thanks again in advance.

Thanks Big Dean for the advice! I got a good spark from the coil, so the next thing I did was dribble a little gas down the throat of the carb and the engine started right up. So I put about a gallon of gas in the tank and it stayed running! I guess the moral of this post would be "Don't trust your eyes to check the level of your fuel, you breath in too many vapors and can't see straight" By the way, excellent site you have. Nice to have a mechanic on my side!

You can pull the plug out of the bottom of the carburetor to see if you are getting gas to it The carb may have filled up after setting a while so put a bucket under it and let it run a a pint or so out to see if the flow stops. Pull your coil wire from the cap & hold the end about a 1/4'' from the block you should get a good spark if not look for a broke wire check the points to be sure they are opening & closing check to see if the distributor shaft is turning it may have sheared the pin through the gear. Those are the things I would check first. Hope this help If I can be of further help Email Big Dean
