I have Massey ferguson 25 desiel. I has less than 1200 hours on it. I sat in a barn for 25 years tied up in an estate. It has the ejector pump and ejectors rebuilt. It is hard to start but when you get it started, it run great. Any suggestions as to why it is so hard to start. I am ready to sell it as it is. Help

The 25 probably has a Perkins A4.107. It has a thermostart that has to be used even at moderate temparatures. Without operating the thermostart it is very hard to start the engine. The thermostart is located in the intake manifold and you can recognise it by the electric wire connected to it.
Turn the ignition key couterclockwise and after a holding the key in that position for some 30 seconds to a minute the engine should start. If you operate the key with one hand you should feel the thermostart getting hot with the other hand. Once you get the "feel" of it the engine is easy to start even in cold conditions. The basic priciple is that some fuel in the intake manifold is heated by an electric element. Once heated the element expands and opens a valve getting some fuel in. The fuel evaporizes and makes the engine start. Once the engine is running the air cools down the elemnt closing the fuel supply. Make sure there is an adequate supply of fuel to the element. If not the element will burn and has to be replaced! If the bottom of the intake manifold is not getting hot check the wiring by connecting a 12 volt lamp to the wire and chassis.
My 25 has a lot of hours, was left under just a roof for 10 years or so and started right away when i discoverd this pre-heating element. You can follow me from a distance by the smoke in all kind of gray but it just runs and runs. Good luck, the 25 is a nice little machine.

I have a chance to buy a MF25 that starts and runs great but the rear lift is stuck in the UP position. What could this possibly be? The current owner just replaced the PTO shaft so could he possibly not put something back together correctly? Also, my local MF dealer says stay away from this tractor due to the difficulty in ordering and finding parts? Is this true?

The Perkins diesel engine is in use for all kind of purposes. If your local MF dealer can't help any Perkins dealer can e.g.:>Link
Just>Link make sure it is burned no use buying if it's still good.
good luck

I am not familiar with the MF25 but there could be several reasons for the hard starting. My first concern would be the condition of the cylinder walls. If the tractor has sat for 25 years even inside a barn, the mositure in the air could cause a build up of rust on the cylinder walls. This will cause a loss of ring seating and resultant loss of compression. This compression is particularly important for cold starting. If this is the problem and if the tractor runs well when started the cylinder walls are likely not too bad. They will get better over time with good hard use although they will never be as good as they were. If compression is low in only one or two cylinders you will notice an uneveness when you turn the engine over with the starter.
The other possibility is old fuel. You mentioned that the fuel injector pump and injectors have been overhauled but I would make sure that the old fuel has been drained out and the fuel filters replaced. If the tractor runs well, the filters would not be the cause but they should be changed because of the possible biological fuel contaimination that they may have. The old fuel could have lost some of it's combustibility. I believe that this is a less likely cause but possible.
Another possibility is poor valve seating. Any valves that have been in the open position for twenty five years might not be seating well for combustion due to rust on the surface. Again I think this less likely and this will get better with use. Where is the tractor located? Can you tell me which engine this tractor has?
Good luck, Bob

Thanks for the reply. All filters have been replaced. And it has been run for aprox. 40 hours before the difficulity started.
