Added hydraulics to a Super 101? I was just wondering about finding and installing a front mount pump driven off the crank, and if this is feasible.

Thanks guys, I think I'll study in the idea of a front mounted power steering type pump, perhaps I can find one of the old style pumps they used on trucks which had a seperate resevoir from the pump. I don't have any implement now that require hydraulics, but it would be nice to add a 3 point, or modify my pull type mower to raise and lower hydraulically.

Assuming you have a Chysler engine, perhaps you could avoid all the retrofitting by crossing the
engine model to other applications.Certain Massey
combines had Chysler power, hydraulic headers. If
you can locate the parked combine, the housing,
pump and gear may bolt up to your engine. The other parts, from a 1950 M-H tractor should get
you updated to central hydraulics. Going the front
pump might involve knotching the frame, an odd
fitting project. Good luck.

I bought a 101 Junior once that had a pump driven directly off the front crank nut (through a coupling) and I wouldn't advise doing it. Everytime that pump kicked in it worked on the nut (trying to loosen it) and the key in the keyway on the crank pulley. It was in pretty sad shape when I got it, very loose and worn. I just removed it and put on a new key and nut and didn't replace it.

I saw a Massey that didn't have hydraulics converted to lift a snow blade. The guy just went to the auto wreckers and bought a power steering pump for $10 and mounted it at the front of the tractor and ran a longer belt off the crank-generator-waterpump onto the power steering unit. The only problem is in the amount of fluid capacity, this could be rectified by plumbing in a small tank to hold a few gallons of hydraulic fluid so that other equipment could be operated. His worked well but he had limited lift because of hydraulic capacity, although a snowblade doesn't need to come up really high anyway. It can be done....Mike in Exeter Ontario
