Looking at the service manual for my MF65 continental gas tractor, I discovered that my canister type oil filter was missing the spring that holds the fliter tight to the engine block. Because the parts are no longer available through my local dealer, I had to improvise by using a spring that appears to be a match from a hardware store.

I purchased a new agco oil filter from my massey dealer, and went about changing the oil and filter with the new spring. When I started the tractor up after the change, oil blew out from around the new gasket. To make a long story short, after several tries I discovered that one of the rubber grommets on the end of the new agco filter appeared to be covering the tiny return port (hole) in the side of the bolt. The filter shown in the service manual uses paper/fiber gaskets, not the rubber gromment like the new filter has. I found that the after market filters also used the paper/fiber gasket. I purchased a Wix brand filter. Problem solved... or so I thought.

This morning I started up the tractor for the first time since the oil change a month ago. After a few seconds, oil again blew by the gasket. I disassembled the canister again, checked to make sure that the gasket was in place, reassembled and tightened the bolt as tight as I dared. Everything held for over 30 minutes while idling the tractor in the shed. After about an hour of field work, it blew again. I'm at my wits end here to figure out whats happening. I've verified that the passage through the bolt is clear, and everything looks like the diagram in the service manual. I have searched for a spin-on adapter kit, but have not been able to locate one for the gas model 65. The list one for the Perkins Diesel, but not the gas. Anyone have any ideas? Thanx! Matt

Matt:

I have a MF 65 with gas engine. It uses a screw on Filter and works fine. I use a hastings LF 117 filter. It just screws on the engine. I believe the fram filter is 3614. Any autoparts store will have a cross reference chart.

The filter has a small diameter opening where it screws on the engine.

Hope this helps you out.

Mike,

Do you mean that the spin-on filter works without an adapter? Matt
