Does anyone know if it is possible to date a Wallis tractor by it's serial number? My 20-30 is #52889 and I'm guessing at 1926 but I'm not sure. Anyone?

This is an inexact science and I'm not an expert, but I think your tractor is a little later. 1926 serial # for the 20-30 started at 40001, and climbed to about 69000 by 1932. By extrapolation this would put yours around 1928 or 1929, but I don't know production figures for each year. Anyone else any wiser?

Thanks for your reply Allan. My Massey serial# book claims the same thing - Wallis 20-30's began with #40001 in 1926 and ended with #69000 in 1932. This may be a little pushy to say, but I think this must be wrong. If the numbers actually did start at 40000 then that means there were about 29000 model 20-30's made! That figure sounds a bit high to me. My Wallis is #52889 and according to the tag was built by the J.I. Case Plow Works, so using the accepted Wallis serial number lists as a guide, my tractor was the 12889th off the assembly line before the 1928 Massey-Harris buyout. That means that Wallis built almost 13000 tractors in a year-and-a-half or so. Again, that figure seems a bit high to me.

I am sure that the first Massey Harris 25 was indeed #69001 but I am not so sure that the last 20-30 was #69000. Through parts books and such I have reason to believe that the Wallis 20-30 numbers are more like a start of #50000 and a last number around 65000. That would make a 5 year run of about 15000 tractors or 3000 units per year. Considering that Allis-Chalmers made the very popular model U for 15 years and made only about 18000, these numbers sound more realistic to me.

Does this sound plausible or am I all wet here?
