I recently purchased a Massy Harris 44 Diesel. I am overhauling the tractor and replacing the motor. Based on the serial number this is a wide front end standard model. So I ordered the service manual for a standard. However, my tractor also has live PTO, Bendix brakes, and Power lift. The manuel we received has band brakes. So I decided I have the 44 special inspite of the serial number.

I then had opportunity to talk to the son of the original owner and he says he upgraded the brakes , PTO and lift and added power steering. So I guess I have an anomoly.

My problem is that I need the portion of the 44 Special Manuel that has the service instructions for the PTO and the Brakes. Basically I have the brakes tore down and need the picture to put them back together with. Is there anywhere I can download the brakes part of the service manual, or perhaps someone can scan & email me the brake/PTO part of the Special Manual. Mr. Siegrist says the rest of the Special Manuel won't benefit me so I really don't want to order the second manual if I don't need to.

Thank you
Paul

Some confusion here, Paul. If you have the right
side hand clutch for live PTO, this assembly, from 1950-57, always had double disc brakes. Early
44's('47-'49)had band brakes(junque). By 1950,
the Bendix shoe brakes were on 44's, with a kit
available for the earlier models, complete with
new pedals. All Special S/N's began with '5'.
A S/N:44 DISF 43600 would be a diesel,standard,'52
model 44. A Special was defined by number, NOT letter. Do you have shoe or disc brakes? If your
44 has central hydraulics, it is 1950, or newer.
The manual in incorrect, and the seller should exchange it. Kindly post the S/N of your 44. Good luck.

The serial number of my tractor is 44DIRF46206. It is a 1953 44 Standard Diesel. I do have the right side hand clutch for the PTO and I have Disc Brakes. I ordered the manual from Yesturday's Tractors based on that serial # and received manual MH-S-44 DSL and it has band brake instructions in it.

Thanks for all the help I can get. Tractor's in 100 pieces!!!

Paul,
Your S/N calls the 44 as a Diesel Row Crop(38"
rear wheels),foot clutch(live PTO hand clutch
was never known by the codes used by M-H). Your
manual is the wrong selection. When you get into
disc brakes/live clutch, you need I &T shop Guide,
the M-H live power service manual, and a good M-H
tractor parts list(33,Special,333/444). I & T will
get you through, the long way, but, only if you're
determined. Did the live clutch function properly?
We get serious here, this is no half-baked fix,
you do it all, and correct, or it does not work. Do you have seals, brake & clutch discs? I can copy
pages, but who's brass balls will turn the bolts?
Some committment required on a two day job, sweat
labor. Are you prepared? Post your reply.

Thanks for the info. Greatly appreciated. I think I can manage the "brass Balls to turn the Bolts!" I overhauled a 1954 OC3 Oliver Crawler last year!

I have the Repair Parts List for the 22 Diesel Tractor for Serial #'s 44DR1001 and up, and the Service Manual I ordered from Yesturday's Tractor for the standard. Ron Swinamer e-mailed me a couple of pages for the brakes and PTO, but they were too light to read. He says he has a I & T manual for $17.00. And Yesturday's Tractor has a 44 Special DSL w/Hyd Parts Manual. Where do I get a M-H Live Power Service Manual?

I don't know if the live clutch functions at this point or not, Mr. Siegrist says it functioned when he parked it.

Thanks again for all your help.
Paul

What's with the 22 reference? You do not have a
Special, you have a Row Crop 44, 1953 vintage. Return the useless manual, for a 40K series 44
Repair Parts List. If not available, get a refund, not a runaround. $17.00 for the I & T
Shop Guide? E bay runs them through for about
ten. If you are eager, I'll send you mine. The
M-H Service guide is a bootleg reprint of the
Massey-Harris booklet. Not a best seller, since so detailed, the twelve springs need testing for
tension, before installation, etc. I'll e mail.
