TO30 3pt hydraulic lift INOPERATIVE-Help!

If anyone could be of any help here, I would be much obliged. I recently purchased a TO30 with a Wagner Loader. I was told that the 3 pt lift worked (tractor was inoperative at time of purchase). I have since managed to get the tractor running (runs strong!) but the 3pt lift does not work. I suppose it could have worked before I got it- the rear had a fixed trailer hitch that would have prevented it from raising - possibly overloading the pump if it was engaged while this was on. It's also possible it hasn't worked in years. In any event, the 3pt lift is totally inoperative- it doesn't make an attempt to go up at all, ever. I pulled off the PTO cone, and the PTO does work. After draining some of the rear oil (it was overfilled), I removed the right side inspection cover. I am unable to see anything "wrong", however, I probably don't know what to look for in there. While the tractor is running and the PTO is engaged, it appears as if the pump is turning ("lub-dub-dub" of oil motion from the center of the pump area). I didn't see any oil shooting out or spraying all over. Any ideas on what to do?

John,

OldFarmBoy Jim recommends Big Dean's site. That some of the best advice you can get. I have a 165 Massey Ferguson that with the help of Dean's information, is back to being fully operational.

Big Dean answers your questions very tactfully, not with some smart answer. He is a very good source of information.

Hi John,

You stated there is a Wagner loader on your tractor. Does it operates from an independent
pump or is operated from internal tractor hydraulic pump? If runs from internal pump
does the loader operates? In this case there is a diverter valve somewhere to change from loader
to 3pt. If loader is operated from internal pump
the 3pt cannot operate when using loader.

Otherwise if the tractor was not used for many years something may be stuck..use the tractor and keep the PTO running all times with PTO cover on for safety and free space for 3pt arms to be safe if it decides to work suddenly. You may have a
pleasant suprise after 1 hour or 2.

Lets $0 cost diagnostics and safety first

HTH.....Good luck

Thanks Joe, appreciate the feedback. The loader has a external independant pump (front) so it is not related. I think the problem is the prior owner left the lift "on" and put the fixed links (trailer hitch) on the 3pt. This wasn't a problem until I got it running. Not knowing what was on or off, it appears that I may have caused it to be overloaded, in which case the pressure relief valve should have kicked in. The fluid is differentiated between old and new, so I will start with draining the system and putting in fresh fluid.
Thanks, I will let you know what happens.

John.
I recently brought a MF 35 back to life. I learned a lot about the Ferguson lift system from Big Deans website, TractorSmart.com, and the owner's and shop manuels.

-Start by identifying whether your pump has a filter or screen that is more than likely mucked up solid (you will have to remove the left side inspection cover to access it ). Clean that out first and trouble shoot from there. If you don't do this, you're shooting yourself in the foot .

-Next, remove the right side inspection cover and see what the vertical contol lever is doing when you move the lever on the lift quadrant. It should move a control valve roller back about 1/2 to 3/4 inch.

-Take a pressure reading with a direct reading guage from the fitting on the transfer plate (located on the right front corner of the lift cover.

-Now you're ready to e-mail Big Dean and get the straight skinny on how you should tackle the problem.

Enjoy the opportunity to get to know Harry Ferguson up close and personal!

Jim
