I purchased a Massey Harris 44 Special.. The engine appears to be stuck, however, if I put a pipe wrench on the shaft leading to the Transmission, I can turn it either way about a quarter turn. I have been soaking cylinders with deisel fuel for quite sometime now, but doesnt appear to be helping.. any suggestions?? Please post and also email to [email protected] Thank yo

I was looking and see you have a little problem. I have a 44 special and I left if sit for about a year and with no cap on the muffler and it had water down in one piston. I restored the tractor and painted it thinking it ran, ( the engine sat out side) and when I was finish I put it all back to gether to find it would only turn about a half a turn, I could turn it back and forth but not all the way around. It was a little rust build up from water sitting in on one piston and made enough of a ridge that it wouldn't start. I took the head off and cleaned the clynder wall and put it back to get and it runs like a charm. was your tactor sitting out side?? if so I will bet that is what happen, please responsed.
thanks matt

If you can turn the shaft between the engine and transmission 1/4 turn, check to see if the fan, front crank pully or any thing on the engine turns with the rear shaft so you know the engine actually moves rather than the clutch not holding. If you can turn the engine with this rear shaft you may have something ontop of the piston not letting you move the piston to the top of the stroke. Could be mice have carried nuts or nesting material down into the cylinder or maybe wasps have made a mud nest in there. It has happened, take the plugs out and and see what you can and maybe put a wire in there and see what moves. I bought a GP once that would turn almost a half turn and the ownwer said the valves were holding it from turning but it was full of mud dobbers nest.

This is my own follow up..... .I didnt mention that this tractor run okay all summer long, it was after it sat idle most of the winter that this problem occurred. (Turning about one quarter in each direction)..

Through 1952, M-H tractors came with a hand crank,
secured between the engine and U-frame. If you know of a 44 or 30 nearby, borrowing the crank,
you can best attempt to turn the engine over. You
may want to drop the pan to check the crankshaft.
If all appears ok, get a second opinion from a good mechanic. He may be able to connect you with
a good lead to repair the problem. Good luck.
