Hi
I am considering buying a MF 35 Diesel (not yet sure which diesel motor) which the owner says needs a head gasket. Is this a HUGE!! job? Are there specific symtoms I need to look for and ask about to determine if there is damage beyond the head gasket? Might I be into one of those "while we are at it we might as well" situations where a complete overhaul would be recommended?

I am certainly no mechanic and I am really just trying to gather more questions to ask when I speak with this person again.

Thanks
Bob

because the tractor is probably 40 years old it is reasonable to get one that has wear and tear. i wouldnt get too nervous about changing this gasket. the tank , rocker cover and then about 14 nuts is all needs removing to change the gasket, its worth getting the head machined when its off and getting the injectors reconditioned. i will make a differance in power. the rings culd b checked when head is off but usually they are perfect.

Why does it need a head gasket? Did it overheat? If so it could need the head machined if it has distorted. Is there water in the oil? Is the head cracked & the gasket replacement an assumption as far as a remedy goes? Is this the first time a head gasket has gone on this unit? We had a 135 that continued to do head gaskets & eventually found that the piston sleeves can move slightly & cause ongoing probs with head gaskets. That one overheated once too often & required a major overhaul.I'd want to hear it running before i parted with the cash, unless it is being sold cheap enough to afford the requisite amount of money to be spent should a major overhaul be needed.Good luck.

Head gasket job on 1995 Ford Areostar XLT, 6 cylinder a few months ago. Rens good with no leaks and no overheating. Only thing, uses approx 1 quart of oil every 350 miles. Problem related to head gasket work and if so, can anything be done?

Thanks Paul
I also talked with Big Dean and he said about the same thing. Turns out when the fellow called me back it was a Standard Diesel (I was looking for a Perkins), there was water in the oil, he didn't know if this had happened before, his "handy neighbour told him it "sounded" like it needs a new H.G.

Based on this and the fact he already had an offer to be confirmed later yesterday I told him "Good Luck"
