I scanned all over this Massey Harris 44 special. I cannot find any numbers on this tractor that start with 44 then a letter then the number. I have numbers off the transmiision cover, and the numbers under the frame below the side rails, and I also found a number on the cylinder mount on the right hand side of the seat, its stamped MF and then under that is the word "canada" then under canada a long number that I believe ends in M1 !!! but those dont tell me the serial number, any other other suggestions ?

Massey-Harris stamped the serial numbers into the top of the transmission housing behind the pto shifter cover. You usualy have to scrap off the paint etc to see it.This is the most common place to find a serial number on a Massey-Harris tractor if the metal number tag is missing.
