HI.. I was wondering if any of you guys could give me some ideas as to what may be wrong with my 1958 TO35.. It's got the 4 cylinder standard brand diesel engine.. we purchased it from a guy who said it was running and he shut it off then it wouldnt crank back up. We checked the pump timing and found it was off a bit so we re-timed the pump, purged the fuel system and it wouldnt crank so we puled the valve cover and put #1 on TDC and the rockers had slight ammount of slop in them so im assuming it hasnt jumped valve timing. We pulled it with the other tractor and it would smoke and knock when you opened the throttle but made no power, it also blew oil out of the oil cap excessively like it had very high crank case pressure. Reluctantly we shot a bit of either into the engine but it just knocked and smoked the same as it did when we opened the throttle. we checked compression and it seems that the first and last cylinders are lagging but the middle two seem to be doing their part. I took the head off and the head gasket didnt seem to be blown. I was wondering if this sounds like it could be anything other than a slap wore out cylinder bore or could the valves be wore out and cause the low compression and the excessive blow-by? Could it be possible that the guy we bought it from really did just shut it off and it not crank back up because it just got so wore out? Does it look like im going to be rebuilding my engine soon? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Also I was wondering if a continental gas or a perkins diesel engine would be a direct replacement for the "standard" brand diesel engine thats on my tractor. Many thanks in advance!

Check the muffler to see if it is plugged with a mouse nest, etc. Have seen this happen before and will make the engine act like you describe.

It sounds like you have something out of time. When you checked the valve timing did you check that when 1 was on compression that 4 exhaust had just closed, and intake was just opening? These engines could be ornery to start when they got worn. Are the glow plugs working?

Yeah #1 was on compression so Im still all confused.. My engine was one of the non glo plug versions with the heater element in the intake manifold that allows heated fuel to be dripped into the manifold (kinda weird). I figured after pulling it around the field three times and spraying either in it at 90 degrees ambient air temperature then it should want to fire even if it was sans glo plugs. Stumps me... thanks for the idea!

If it was 90 degrees and wouldn't start for a pull you've got a problem. How about the pump timing, I forget the setup on the 35 (my father in law had one of these), but some pumps can be put on 1/2 turn out so to speak, so that the marks line up and all, but it's firing 4 when it should be firing 1. The only other thing is compression. Do the valves all have clearance?
