I am just finishing up a year-long total restoration of a MF-65 with a Continental gas engine. This was also my first tractor restoration. From my efforts, I can tell you what I should have done: First, make sure you have a complete shop manual and parts book. There are some tricky aspects of the dual clutch which should not be attempted blind.

Next, don't cut corners. My tractor reportedly had a recent engine job before I got it. However, the guy before me did not appear to have been very meticulous, causing lots of problems when I rebuilt it again.

My most serious problem was that the thrust bearing failed and the crankshaft bored its way into the block. This is apparently not uncommon with the MF-65 and is caused by an improperly adjusted clutch. Luckily, I was able to have the crankshaft welded and reground, but it was expensive!

Lastly, shop around for parts. I got many of my parts from a local Massey dealer only to find the same OEM part on the internet for less than half price.

Good Luck.
