1983 MF-690, 248 cu in 4 cyl Perkins diesel, 67 pto HP. At low speed around 800 rpm the engine surges slightly, continues at 1000 rpm, get less at 1200 rpm and not noticeable above that. Starts very easy, just barely turn the key. No blow by. No smoke. Seems to be in great shape. What could cause this surging?? Thanks for your help.

Check that fuel lift pump for a pin hole , or your suckin in air some where. but do the simple things by process of elimination first. Change that Fuel filter. If you did that already you might have gotten a bad one they don't guarantee them not to surge just to filter. Change your air cleaner And Check your plumbing for leaks or poor connections. Check those Injector lines first thing see if the injectors are clean on the outside if they are not you are probably not getting a full flow of fuel to each cylinder. hope this helps. then you can test for compression , pull injectors and have them metered, have your injection pump checked etc. good luck.

Thanks Mike. Have already changed the primary and secondary air filters and checked all air intake plumbing. I have a new fuel filter, but have not installed it yet. Will do that first.

What do you mean about seeing if the "injectors are clean on the outside"? I have pressure washed the entire tractor and cleaned it all up good by using engine cleaner and then the pressure wash. Problem of surging was there before and after the clean up.

Thanks for your help.

dust collects easily on even the smallest of fuel leaks, it is just a sign of a fuel leak that is not a wet fuel leak. It is also readily spotable in dusty conditions (like ours)down here.
