TO-30: Is 6' rotary cutter too big?

I just bought a TO-30 and a 6' King Bee rotary cutter. The implement sales guy says a TO-30 can pull a 6' cutter, but my mechanic says the biggest (Bush Hog) you can use is a 4 footer, maybe 5' at the most. I am a horsewoman, not a mechanic so if you have a fix, please keep the responses low-tech.

I used a 6' rotary mower ("bush hog" type mower)on a MF-50 gas (about 31 pto hp) and it was all it could do in fairly thick grass. On the TO-30 without live PTO, you won't be able to get the mower up to speed before you start forward, so you'll be at a disadvantage. I'd try talking the mower salesman down about a foot, if I could.

Good luck!

Hi Jill,
I have a 135 massey, about 36 horsepower and I use a 5' King Kutter on it and it works just fine. I had a friend give me a deck off of a Rhino 6' heavy mower that is missing the gearbox and blades and it squatted the tractor down with just that on it. My best advice would be on smaller tractors like that to get a mower that would just mow the tractor width out(from outside of the rear tire to outside of the other rear tire. 5' should do that for you. I agree that if level ground and not cutting very heavy a 6' could be used but a 5' would be easier on the tractor.

yes, it is too big, specially if its heavy- duty like a Woods 6 ft. Might handle a cheap (light)'hog on level ground only. Weights on front will help some. My MF 65 is 50 hp & it cant handle my Woods 6'.

TO 30 can handle 6 footer a 5 footer would probably be better around here there are lots of Ferguson and Fords with 5 foot cutters. as long as not in big heavy or tall grass If you mow at high setting and then later at lower setting and keep it mowed it should handle a 6 footer ok. The TO 30 is 29HP about 25 at drawbar I think.
