New to owning a tractor so this may seem a bit dumb to some of you guys...
The lift will raise and lower but only the outer lever on the controls has any effect on the position and then the whole range is controled by only about an inch and a half movement on the lever, just doesnt seem right. The lift "floats" too, when bush hogging if I run over a bump, sometimes the mower will stay raised when I get on level ground.
Also I think I have a problem with the pto- I always have to grind the gears to put it in use or put the lever in before I start the engine. Does this tractor have a 2 stage clutch? There is a small foot pedal on the right side below the seat that I think is supposed to be for disengaging the pto but it has no effect when pressed. The tractor is around a '70 model.
Any ideas???
Thanks, Ken

Thanks for all the feedback. Paul, you'll be glad to know I bought a manual yesterday, lol. I read about the diff. lock just before I got online to check my post. The adjustment on the clutch seems to have been already ran all the way back on the exterior, I'll have to check inside to see if I can do any adjustment there or if I need a new clutch. I don't have a full pedal on the clutch so it could go either way, but I definately don't have the second stage operational. Big Dean, I've seen your posts on here before and know you are a great source. Expect an e-mail, lol. As I said in my initial post, I'm new to owning a tractor but I have used Fords before. I knew something was not right about how my lift and pto was behaving but I thought it might have been I simply was missing something in the operation of the Massey that was different from the old Ford I was used to. Other than these 2 problems I really like the tractor. If I can get these straightened out I think it will do anything I ask of it.
Thanks again folks!

Hi Ken You have already got some good advice post here. I will try to add a little more If the transmission will shift into gear without grinding but the PTO won't that tells me you definitely have a dual clutch. As with any thing that has a clutch as the clutch wears you periodically have to adjust the pedal free travel. With the dual clutch used on the Massey Ferguson tractor about every third time you adjust the pedal free travel you have to go up though the bottom of the bellhousing & make the adjustment to the PTO clutch. On your hydraulics when using the Position control lever (inside lever) the draft lever needs to be all the way back in the fully raised position. If the Position lever won't work with the Draft lever set like this there is a piece of linkage that will jump out of place to put it back where it should be the lift cover has to be removed.
I have pictures with all this detailed if you will email me I will send them to you. Big Dean

Ken,

I'm about six months ahead of you. I got my 2135 (first tractor) last December. The FIRST thing I got after that was the operator's manual.

To disengage the second stage clutch, push the pedal (the regular clutch on the left) ALL THE WAY down. If you can't engage the PTO then without grinding it, the clutch needs adjusting.

That thing with the two levers is the hydraulic system quadrant. The outside lever is the draft-control lever and the inside lever is the position control lever. Unless you're using draft control, the draft control lever should be all the way up. I'm no expert on draft control, but I think it's used when you're using an earth-engaging implement. The draft control will sense harder ground and raise the implement before you bog down the tractor. I think it's good for plowing a big long section.

As Paul said, the pedal on the right is the differential lock. engaging it will lock the two rear wheels together so's they turn at the same speed. This is VERY useful when you're trying to get unstuck, but if you engage it when a wheel is spinning, you'll do serious damage to it.

I paid $35 fo my manual at the Massey dealer. Although I might have paid less on line, I'm really glad I got it. This website is also a wealth of info:)

2135's are pretty rare birds. They were made from '64 to '69, I think. If you post the serial number (under the dashboard, on the left side) here, you can find out what year you have. I love mine. It'll be great to hear from another 2135 owner on this board:)

My brother and I also have a venerable 2135. We aim to set in on it shortly. We shall try to record and post our progress. B.

Get onto Big Dean Austins site and read MF135 details. The dual clutch on the MF135 requires regular adjustment - This is a common problem and easy to fix, Big Dean has the details. I assume the 2135 is the same as a MF135 etc.

The "small pedal on the right" is, I'm guessing the differential lock.
The grinding you experience when engaging the pto indicates that the pto clutch ( yes it is a two stage clutch )is not disengaging fully. You should be able to adjust this by adjusting the clutch release arm. As for the two leavers, one is draft & the other is lift.If the draft is high the lift range will be negligable. Try it with the draft control at the other extent of its travel. You need to understand how draft works for you to be able to identify any problems that are really there. To be honest ken, it sounds to me like you need to get yourself an operation manual for the 135 before you start this old girl up again. Apart from the fact that you should be familiar with the units operations prior to use from a safety point of view, you can do some expensive damage if you operate the machine contrary to the manner in which it was designed for use. For instance, " the small pedal on the right", engage this when your wheels are spinning fast & you got your self an expensive repair bill. There aint no shame in sticking your hand up to learn the basics, but make sure you do that before you cost yourself some unnecessary expense. Happy, safe tractoring. ;-)
