I want to apologize in advance, I am new to the tractor game. I am looking at a Massey 35 gas from an indenpendent used dealer, and would appreciate any information on this tractor. I'm looking to work a small acreage with this tractor, mostly mowing, box blade, and some limited hobby farming. Thanks

Thanks for all the information, I haven't bought this tractor yet but I'm looking seriously. To answere some questions: GY3020 - the tires are good, and the fit and finish is good for what I've been seeing. Wayne - thanks I found Big Dean, while he said the diesel is a better tractor he said the gas would do what I need. He thought the price was a little high for what I was getting though. Don - thanks for the information I was wondering what size implements it would handle.

Hi Jerry:

I bought a MF35 with Perkins diesel four years ago. What a great little tractor. I used it to brush hog my dad's place, that had weeds taller than the tractor, she never missed a lick pulling a 5' hog. I thought I wanted an 8N until I stumbled across the Massey - very happy I did too.

What part of Oklahoma are you in? My wife, son and I are moving to a small town near Durant, when our son graduates in three years. I can hardly wait!

Terry

Hey Jerry,
Just wanted to put some input in here. I have a 135 massey and I wouldn't take for it. It will handle a 9' cut haybine, my dual rake set up, and more. Have the motor running and pull the dipstick to see if you are getting any blowby from the rings. There is no way you can see all things that could be wrong, its really kind of a gamble when buying anything used but if its a reputable dealer you are fairly safe. Check for leaks and while driving it try holding the brakes down while letting out on the clutch to check the clutch and gears. Its not too hard to check one out just look it over with a fine tooth comb. What physical condition is it in and how are the tires?

I use my FE35 3 cyl Perkins on 5 acres and also mow my neighbor's 2-3 acres. I box blade a 300 foot drive. I move dirt with a scoop and do any other utility jobs when neccessary. It is plenty of tractor and could do a lot more. I don't think you can go wrong. I do have a friend that didn't know anything about tractors and bought one that had serious problems. He pretty much threw $5,000 down the toilet. If you are not sure, have it checked out by a good tractor mechanic. A couple of hundred dollars might save you thousands. C. T.

Same as garvas - mine's a MF35 Deluxe, Perkins diesel. When I bought it last spring, I didn't know anything. First tractor, no experience at all. Hobby farmer! Small acreage (3-2/3 acres) and was told to buy an 8n by two friends. Looked at an 8n gas and my MF35 side-by-side and no comparison. I just felt embarassed for buying so much tractor for what I expected to need - no way! I've been very thankful repeatedly, and even the guys who recommended the 8n admit it was the right choice. So far, have used blade, rear bucket, manure spreader, disk, spring tooth, spike harrow, bush hog, potato plow and have an auger waiting till I have time to put in some fence - all loaned by very generous friends and neighbors. The only implement I own so far is a little 3-point lifting frame - KingKutter "carryall". Am watching for sickle mower, rake and baler to harvest my 3 acres of grass hay and neighboring small acreages. Expect to be sharing the implements with those generous neighbors, or maybe even harvesting for them.

Jerry, I have three TO35s and an MF135 and they are great tractors. I have completely restored several of them. All but one are diesels. My gas tractor is completely overhauled and restored and I just listed it for sale because I have one too many. I use it just for mowing. I am near Sacramento California. Let me know if you might be interested in it.

You didn't say if you were looking at gas or diesel but either way I love mine. You will be limited in farming to smaller disk and such. I mow with a 5ft. brush hog and it does a great job. The tractor has 6 forward gears and you can always find a gear to do the job. Almost made a severe mistake, I started to buy a 8 N Ford but luck found me a 35...

Thanks for the input Garvas. The one I'm looking at is a gas model. I was also told to stay away from the small fords...ie, 8N, and 9N.

I have 3 35s. A FE35, 4 cylinder diesel, a FE35, 4 cylinder petrol/tractor vaporising oil and a MF35, 3 cylinder perkins diesel. While the latter is the best engine, all are good tractors and one would be enough to manage 20 ACRES.

However 3 indulge me in my hobby, save effort in swapping implements and allow one to be in the shed for attemps at restoration to show condition.

Go for it, by a Ferguson or MF tractor.

Simon
