I am looking for a Ferguson or MF 35 to replace my 1951 Ferguson 20-85 so I can have live hydraulics and PTO with the two stage clutch. So far I have found 35s with three different engines - 4 cyl gas, 4 cyl diesel and 3cyl diesel.

Is one of these significantly more reliable than the others? Which one?

Also, is Multipower a good option or is it just more stuff to break down?

What else should I look for?

Thanks
Bob

Are those the models that support your arrogance?

Nice one Roger. I am looking for a Massey 35 with 3cyl Perkins (based on BigDean's recommendation), Power Steering (highly desired), two stage clutch precisely because it doesn't carry the unrealistic green price tag, which seems to be equated to the false logic "if it costs more it must be better". I also ran these JD model number on the AgDealer site and could only find one tractor - a model 1020 for $10,500 Cdn. I'll keep lookin' for a Massey thanks.

I have a 1963 MF 35 with a Z-134 Continental gas motor and have had no problems with it at all.

I have a 165 Massey with 4 cyl and a 150 with a 3 cyl engine. They both are excellent engines. I also had a 65 Massey (which I wish I still had) and it had a 4 cyl Perkins. No problems with either engine. Big Dean is an invaluable source of information for Massey Fergusons. Thanks Dean!

3 cyl. perk diesel is no.1. Low on fuel consumption, low on repair costs.

Multi-power is ok, when it works. If it doesn't, the tractor normally sticks in low. And it stays there until you cough up quite an amount of money...

I too have heard the 3 cylinder diesel is better.I guess however you should consider the condition, price and time on each.I have used both gas and diesel and prefer the diesel.Good luck! You may want to e-mail Big Dean.

Thanks Wayne
I sent Big Dean a note yesterday and am waiting to hear back from him - it is great to be able to get first hand opinions from folks who have no vested interest - like reading the "Best and Worst Buys" in Farm Show magazine - and Big Dean has sure helped me understand the differences in live PTO, independent PTO, two stage clutches etc. - that is why I am looking for a MF 35 to replace my Ferguson TEA 20-85.

look for the 35x if your in the market for one of the 35 series.Good old reliable 3 cyl perkins diesel. it was the best of that series & well on par with the 135 early series. That 3 cyl perkins was good enough for MF and Ford for quite a few years on different models. Good luck

I have all three engines although the 3 cyl perkins is in a MF 135. By far the 3 cyl perkins is my favorite. The 4 cyl diesel is marginally more fuel efficient. The 3 cyl perkins is the best starting in cold weather and the best power. The gas engine runs well and is particularly well suited to do quick little jobs. The perkins has good parts availability at good prices. All three are well built and reliable engines.
