Yesterday, while bush hogging, the diesel began to "chut - chut - chut..." rhythmically (similar to an exhaust head gasket blow-by in a gasoline engine). The sound came from the top and rear of the engine. The location of the sound is not readily visible beneath the sheet metal. The steering became a bit erratic in that the Massey did not corner well. The steering wheel turned well, but the tractor did not respond well (like insufficient power steering fluid). While at idle the diesel shut down by itself. An attempt to restart it failed and there is a deeper more pronounced CHUT-CHUT...again like blow-by. The remaining compression does not seem strong enough to sustain combustion. I opened the radiator cap but there wasn't even a hint of pressure relief after operating for two hours and the ethylene glycol/water mix was filled to the top of the radiator - like it should be. I discussed these conditions by phone with a respected grove tender/tractor operator and his diagnosis is one of two possibilities: stripped cam gears from a seized power steering pump or broken piston from losing a valve (based solely on our telephone conversation). The lack of pressure in the radiator is disturbing and unexplained.

Any similarities or suggestions before I haul it to be repaired?

FINAL ANALYSIS:

Injector loose, exhaust head gasket blowby, clogged fuel pump screen, clogged fuel filter, bad battery, and worn out starter. Compression on the low side at 325 psi for cyls. 1-3 and 300 psi for cyl. 4. She's tired I'm told. Still a good tractor though...

The steering problem suggests a problem with the timing gears at the front of the engine. A compression test would be a good place to start, followed by removing the radiator and timing cover to inspect the timing gears. Next remove the fuel tank and rocker cover to check for broken cam, valve springs etc, also check that the cam is turning with it's gear. To check that it's not a red herring chech that there is oil in the PAS pump reservoir.

Could be a Camshaft failure, My grandfathers 2600 Ford 3 cyl BSD engine done that years ago.. Nothing more than his own lack of maintnace causeed his failure the rocker arms had to be replaced due to the fact that after running wide lash the Valve stem had beat a perfect hole in the end of the rocker. Camshaft went out and she went down to 1 cylinder i managed to get it back home slow and easy.. I was not a happy camper.
