My newly acquired MF 175 is dry on PS fluid. The operators manual calls for M-1116 Hyd Fluid or E.P. Oil M-1129A. My local auto parts store cannot cross reference these to today's products. Can someone please help solve this mystery?
Thanks a bunch-it steers like a bear right now!
Denny

Added appx 1 qt and turned wheels R and L to purge. Seemed to push fluid out on L turn. Working well and it's wonderful! Will monitor PS and crankcase levels now.
Again, thanks to all for your help!

Gentlemen,
Thanks for your help! I bought the correct fluid at TSC and hope to get it in this weekend. I too have wondered why it would be bone dry, however, the prior owner (now deceaseed) bought this tractor at equipment auction so, there is a world of possibilities isn't there? Wish me luck, I'll post a response of how things go and . . . thanks again!
Denny

The system is pretty tollerant of whatever you put in it, be it MP oil,ATF or hydraulic oil. However, you must cure the problem that led to it being dry. This is usually the front seal on the pump, which allows the oil to run out and into the timing case and hence the sump. This thins the engine oil which may well lead to engine problems. Often the shaft is worn where the seal touches it. You may get away with putting the seal on to a different depth but chances are you will end up with a new shaft as well.

What is the part number of that shaft? My 175 is chewing up seals - only lasts about 2 days....
Approximate cost?

Sorry, I've just checked and neither the shaft nor the pump are still available through Masseys. The pump is available from Vapormatic, Part no is VPJ4900, Retail price (UK) is 212 + VAT

My 2 cents is to go to MF dealer and pick up Permatran III fluid. Use in transmission, hydraulic, final plantary drives, and power steering.
