I have a MF205 industrial that is almost done, but I need some advice. I have been looking at the oil bath air cleaner and I have some questions. Do they do a good job? What concerns me the most is, have you ever seen an engine suck up some of that heavy steel wool? My tractor is a 1964, did they use these filters very much after mine? It is hot around here,90 +,so what oil do I put in it? Sorry about all the Questions But folks have been telling me to change it .But they can't give me a good reason. I don't change things because some slick new gimmick is supposed to be better, If the old filters don't cause problems I will keep it! Thanks for all of your great adviced! Mike

I was told by a local engine overhaul co that the oil bath filters are actually much better and safer than the paper cartridge - he even recommended changing to one! They clean the air better, no risk of holes, cheaper. Only slightly messier.

Hello Mike, I saw your post over on the Tractor Talk board but things are a bit quieter over here. Last winter I took apart an old oil bath filter from a '46 Avery that was NOT a well-maintained tractor over the years. I was able to pull out all the steel wool stuff, thinking I'd replace it or clean it before putting it back in. It was amazingly clean, didn't really have to clean it at all to be honest (but it was hard getting it all back in, somehow it wouldn't fit. My point is that the oilbath system works quite well in my opinion ... the idea being that the dirt gets trapped in the bottom cup and oil mostly. Think about how many old tractors are still running that are 50-60 years old and that's all they ever used, and most guys weren't really into regular maintenance programs like we are these days. As far as mess, etc., really how much of a mess are we talking about here? Pour a little oil into your used oil container and wipe out the cup? Not much really when you think about it. My advice is to stay with the original, it's just fine in my opinion. Next thing we'll be changing to plantinum plugs, synthetic oil, and all the new bells and whistles that everyone seems to think is necessary but in fact are simply marketing projects for somebody.
