I am looking to buy a Massey Ferguson 165 w loader. I found one that seems to be in excellent condition except the brakes don't work very well. I have adjusted the linkage so now the pedals engage earlier, but the tractor still doesn't stop unless I really stand on the brakes. A friend that used to have a 165 said they had a similar problem that they were never able to fix. Is this likely to be a routine repair? How much is it likely to cost? Is this a chronic problem with this particular tractor model? I have a hill farm so brakes are pretty important.

You might have to look for another loader tractor.the 165 is not a good tractor for loader work, just for general farm work.

I think brakes are a must, hills or not.

To fix the brakes, you basically have to take the rear axles off. There's just no easy way around it. It's REALLY a pain if you have fluid in the rear tires.

An overhead hoist will help out quite a bit with getting the wheels and axles housings off. Make sure you support the tractor well, and only do one wheel at a time.

It's actually a good job to leave for a dealer to do, since they have the correct equipment.
