Massey 202 w/loader, Z145 gas, hi-low not reverser. Tractor worked fine then stuck in reverse. Hi-low range, no change. Drove backward for 5 minutes, then it popped into neutral. Worked fine for another 20 minutes then happened again. Gear lever cannot be moved. Any guesses before I open it up?

Also, power steering is leaking up under the dash, appears to have been out and rebuilt. Can't see the leak but does not appear to be hoses. It isn't bad until you put some RPM to it and turn with a load in the bucket, then get a flood. I bet it dropped a pint in an hour. Any common problems? How much is a rebuilt unit? How hard / expensive is to to rebuild yourself?

Both problems have been addressed in the past but if you don't have the time to rummage through the archives...

First, shifting problems are common on masseys. Open fluid fill cap to left of shifter and using a long screwdriver push the forks back and forth till everything lines up again and the shifter functions again. Keep in mind that this is not repairing the problem as parts are worn. Patience and a gentle hand are required when shifting.

PS leak has been reported to be the seal on the bottom of the steering column and by the sounds of the posts don't seem to be that difficult of a repair. However, you mentioned that the unit has been rebuilt already. I wonder if the backlash or possibly preloading of bearings is adjusted properly causing premature failure of the seal. If this is the case, replacing the seal will only buy you a little time.

I have the parts and service manuals for the tractor but I need serial number to look up accurate information. Let me know what you want to do and I'll send you the information.

I can see that a soft touch on the shifter will "fix" my problem. I'm used to my Oliver that requires a more "firm" approach. I appreciate the suggestion on using the fill hole to work it loose - I'll try that tomorrow (if it's not raining).

The leak appear to be from the top, but the whole dash area is so soaked that the starter switch disintegrated and the wiring insulation is softened. I'll clean it up and look at the suggested areas when I get the switch replaced. I'll clean it up then spray on foot powder - best leak detector for oil. The problem should show up immediately.

Many thanks! I like the beast, and hope I can make it happy.
