Hi all
Where do I start looking, MF 135 just stopped driving it doesn't matter which gear you are in or whether you are in high or low range. The hydraulic lifter is not working any more either.
Any ideas would appreciated

Jack

I have seen the transmission output coupler slide off it spleen, a cotter pin centers it between the 2 shafts. Sometimes the coupler itself will shear, designed as fuse. If it has merely slid back it can be slid ahead and a new cotter pin installed through thge side covers.

Hi Marty -

Any crunching noises? If so, don't run it again until you can get some expert help. Crunching noises are chewing up $100 bills. $50 for a service call is worthwhile at this point!

No crunching -

Does the PTO shaft turn with the PTO lever engaged?

That will tell you if PTO drive train is working, if it is the conventional dual clutch setup. (If it's an independent PTO, I don't know the setup.) If the PTO turns, the hydraulic lift pump should be turning, and you have a leakage problem.

PTO not turning? Possible clutch problem. Remove the plate under the bell housing (4 cap screws, about 1" heads), and take a look up inside.

The driving gear train is separate. Remove the transmission oil filler cover and see if any of the gears are turning when the motor is running. Shut down and see if the gears are sliding when you move the 1-2-3-(4?)-R lever.

Yes? then the problem is further back. Coupling to the differential is disconnected, or possibly High/low gears not engaging (loose shifter forks) or stripped.

No?

Possibly the clutch has a problem.

Thanks for all that info Jack

It did make a very small clunk noise and just stopped. The hydraulic lifter is now working very very slowy now that we towed it back. While we were towing it I can here a horible rumbling noise coming from the rear wheel hub or diff. I have had a closer look around the tractor and can see the side cover where the dipstick is has recently been removed. As well as the rear hub where the noise is coming from. The hydraulic pump/lifter has also been removed recently .

As I do not own this tractor I am not going to fix anything at this stage. The tractor belongs to my hobby farmer neighbour, I was asked to show him how to drive it and broke it on the day it was delivered!

It was bought with no guarantee but the owner is trying to get them to fix or take it back if they they don't I will need every ones help to try and fix it for him.

Tom and Marty -

Thanks, Tom, for the extra tip on the connector.

And Marty -

You did not bust the thing.

There is no way any halfway reasonable operator could do something to cause a massive failure in one shot. These things have been accumulating for years, and by the sound of things, repairs attempted before the sale.

Sounds like you just lit the fuse to set them off!

Good luck!
