Hey everyone,
I have a 1970 135 gas tractor, I know, I wish it were diesel too! Anyhow, Im having some problems with her. It was running fine adn then it just went to spitting and sputtering and running rough. I had it die on me about 30 times today while trying to rake hay. Barely made it back to the shop with it. I have tried adjusting the carb 9 ways to Sunday and its still doing it. My thoughts are trash in the carb? Also, it is sucking big time through the air cleaner, I mean we're talking F5 tornado suck zone time here! Any thoughts would be appreciated. Its really a good little tractor to rake with and it pulls a 9' haybine pretty good too. Gotta get her back up and running quick. Thanks in advance!
Gary

I had the same thing with my 65 kept playing with carb. put in new rebuild kit same thing It ended up being the points was gapped at about .025 the book says .022 but after talking with mech. he said increase gap to about .035 I did this and the old girl never misses a lick now distrib. shaft worn a little and points were almost stiking together also if bushing on distrib. is worn and whobbles will cause missing bad. I had an 8N that did the same thing. I don't know how many times I took the carb. off and cleaned it out and it never made a difference-it was always the points and/or the condenser. If it is the carb you should be able to spray starter fluid into the intake when it's running rough and it would straighten out for a few seconds. Good Luck

I too have a 135 Gas. Same thing happened to me this spring at planting time. Take the gas tank off and completely drain it. Take the gas bowl and screen completely out of the tank and clean it. The screen is a cone type screen and really gets clogged. Blow out the gas lines with air or replace would be better. I also had a carb kit put in. Runs Like a charm. It did suck air like a tornado but that was because the clamp on the air hose were loose.

I agree with Gordon's comments. I'm having the
same problem, only with my M-H 44 Special.
I ended up having to cut the ends out of the
fuel tank and having it sandblasted inside.
It was unbeliveable the flakes of rust and
crud that had accumulated over the years. These
flakes would be drawen over the intake pipe inside the fuel tank and all I would get would
be sputtering and the motor would die. Sounds
like you got the same problem. Hope this helps

My Uncle had the same problem. He took off the tank and cleaned as best possible. Then he put in about an inch of washed smaller gravel and a couple gallons of kerosene. Then he strapped it to his spare in the back of his truck and took back roads to work for a week. After re-cleaning he put in that aftermarket tank coater. He now has a new looking tank with no more problems. ALAN

take the gas line off,at carb blow, air in the line if the fuel flow increases, drain the tank then take the fitting out of bottom of tank, there should be a funnel shaped screen on top of fitting, they are known for getting stoped up with trash, wasp ect. take the carb apart and clean. should take care of the problem. hopethis helps Gordon-(TN)

I am not mechanic but have you checked the ignition system. Spitting usually means that it is missing on one or more cylinders.
